In 1803, John Fenton founded the village of Fentonville on the west side of Trumbull County near modern-day Mentor. He built a small cabin there and named it after his home town in England – Willowick (pronounced /wɛliske/). The settlement grew quickly; by 1830 it had a school, post office, store, and Methodist church. By 1840 it had 12 families and an estimated 100 residents. The start of the American Civil War made life difficult for Fentonville; Union troops burned down his cabin while he was inside during the war effort on October 11th 1861. Afterward, only 8 survivors remain from that initial population; all but two moved away before 1870 as agriculture became more important in local communities across America due to advances in transportation technologies such as railroads and boats. During World War II many Willowick homes were used as military barracks; however most residents left during or shortly after the war when prices for housing increased significantly beyond what they could afford without jobs available outside their community norms (ie., moving out of their neighborhoods).
