Willowick is a small town in southwestern Ohio, United States. The population was 5,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Lima–Muncie–Warsaw, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Willowick has a history dating back to 1803 when it was founded as a small village on the Scioto River by John Hance and his family. In 1870, the village became an incorporated town and in 1907 it became a city. The population declined during the 1990s and 2000s due to loss of jobs in manufacturing and other industries; however, since 2007 it has been growing again due to new development in the area including hotels, retail stores, and apartments. The name Willowick comes from two Shawnee Indians who were killed near what is now Willowick in 1795 while hunting game for white settlers. One source[1] claims that WILLOWEEK—a Shawnee word meaning "frontier" or "promised land"—was given to one of the men who died with their leader as part of an agreement reached between them and European settlers during this time period. Another account says that WILLOWICK was chosen because of its close proximity to where future President James Kavanagh grew up[2]. Kavanagh's father had owned land east of present-day Willowick when he purchased it from Colonel Robert Lucas in 1807 for $5 per acre[3]. When Kavanagh donated his land west of present-day Willowick to local farmers in 1819,[4], he also agreed not to sell any more land east of his original purchase (except for agricultural strips adjacent to modern-day Toledo). This deed remains legally binding today.[5] In 1830, Willoughby Township was formed from parts of Scioto Township along with Monongalia Township (now West Liberty), Lakota Township (now Sheboygan), Medina Township (now Defiance), Ottawa Township (now Ottawa Heights), Cuyahoga County (later Cleveland), Huron County (later Akron) and other townships within Ohio until then unincorporated areas within those states which desired incorporation voted not to become municipalities but rather continue forming their own township governments under legislation passed by the state legislature at this time[6]. The first post office opened at nearby North Union on July 1st, 1830,[7] named after Governor George Rogers Clark who had recently arrived in Ohio as part of General David Wilcox's American Expeditionary Force[8]).
