Willowick, Ohio is a small town in the heart of the Cleveland metropolitan area. It was founded in 1812 by John Fenton and his wife Catharine. The population of Willowick was 576 at the 2000 census. The town is named for a willow tree that stands near the original meeting house. Willowick has been occupied by Native Americans since before Europeans arrived in what is now Ohio. In 1795, General Forbes counted more than 100 Shawnee Indians living in and around Willowick—a territory that included present-day Cleveland and much of today's Akron County. By 1800, however, only about 30 Shawnee remained in existence across all of western Ohio. The first European to visit Willowick was French explorer Louis Jolliet on July 12, 1795. Jolliet explored what is now northwestern Ohio and found several Indian villages along the Great Lakes shoreline but never made it any further into the region because he ran short on supplies and couldn't find suitable land to call his own. In 1812, John Fenton erected a frame meetinghouse just northwest of present-day WillowICK on land donated by him and others from within his village of Rocksville Township (now part of Strongsville). That year also saw the first purchase by Englishman George Stephenson of 8 acres (3 hectares) northeast of present-day WillowICK for $100 with which he laid out a wagon road between Portsmouth, England (then part of Virginia) and Cincinnati, OH (then part of Kentucky). This early wagon road became one of America's most important transportation routes including appearances by Ulysses S. Grant at an event attended by President James K Polk in Buffalo on October 15, 1868; both men traveled down this route during their separate campaigns against Confederate forces east coastward as part as part Operation Overland In 1836–37 Collinwood furnace owner Amos Goudreau opened up operations nearby at what is now known as Old Forge Furnace #1 near intersection OF Trumbull Avenue - Lancaster Road - Willis Avenue - Willowick Drive - State Route 22 . Willowick is a small town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the border of Henry and Stark counties. The population was 2,494 as of the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Hamilton–Middletown, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The Willowick community was platted in 1824 by James Wills and his brother-in-law Daniel Webster, who named it after a willow tree that grew near their home on the west side of Willowick Creek. In 1830, Amos Eaton founded a gristmill in the village and soon began to grow cottonseed crops for export to England and other parts of North America. By 1835, Willowick had become an established town with its own schoolhouse and healthy stores. In 1836, Samuel Morse established a telegraph line from Dayton to Mayfield Heights in neighboring Stark County; Willowick became one of several villages along that line served by the Morse Compound Telegraph Station (later called Electric Avenue). In 1840, John Crampton erected a large millwheel factory at what is now Beavercreek Boulevard in Willowick; this helped drive down local cotton prices and increased exports from WillowICK to Europe and other parts of the world. The town also built its first brick building in 1840. In 1861, when Union forces were besieging Fort Donelson during the American Civil War, General George Armstrong Custer passed through Willowick on his way to battle nearby Louisville; he stopped at the store owned by Amos Eaton before moving on southward towards Fort Donelson. As part of Custer's official military escort throughout much of central Ohio during those days (including visits to various towns along his route), many residents came out into streetside view to watch him pass; some even put up banners reading "General Armstrong! General Armstrong!" The end result was relatively little damage done within town limits as most buildings survived while others were replaced or renovated over time; however early 21st century aerial photos do show significant evidence remaining from pre-war times including sections of sidewalk completely destroyed by cannonballs when Confederate batteries fired upon Union troops under Lieutenant Colonel Robert Ewing during their retreat from Atlanta following that city's Siege (see Battle Of Chattahoochee). Following World War II ended hostilities between America's two main nuclear powers – United States vs Soviet Union – much property within neutral Indiana Territory lay exposed following Russian Invasion including much farmland surrounding present day Willwickkirk Marina which lay abandoned until 1984 when it was purchased by developers subdividing land into flats/condos/townhouses developments with access roads running through them
