Willowick is a small town in the southernmost corner of Ohio, on the border with Kentucky. The population was 2,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Cincinnati–Middletown, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. Willowick originally was called "Washburn". The first settler in what is now Willowick was Abram Washburn, who platted and named his land "Washburn" in 1814. Washburn had come from Connecticut. In 1815 he married Rachel Graham and their children were Abram Washburn II (1817-1892), John Washburn (1820-1900), Rachel Washburn (1824-1905), George Washington Washburn (1828-1901) and Ida Beale Graham (died 1865). They started a new community on what are now State Route 7 and State Route 248 about three miles northeast of present day downtown Willowick. There they built a log cabin known as the Old Home Tavern which still stands today. In 1825 Abram's son John moved to the area and founded another early community called "New Market". New Market metamorphosed into what is now Willowick after two years when Elijah White settled there with his family in 1830. Elijah White was one of four brothers who emigrated from Ulster County, Ireland to Ohio in ballast vessels in 1829 to escape British Crown rule over that part of Ireland – an event later memorialized by James Fenimore Cooper’s novel “The Pioneers” White also became one of the first settlers in what would become Willowick when he bought 640 acres situat
In 1810, the town of Willowick was founded by John Young. It was named for a small stream that flowed through the area. The population of Willowick grew rapidly after it was founded, and in 1828, the first Methodist church was built. In 1865, Willowick became a village and in 1907, the first school fire brigade was formed. In 1916, Willowick became an independent city.
