In 1841 George Stephenson erected the first frame building at 1104 Lewis Road which became known as Stephenson's Bank from 1841 to 1850 when it was bought by Alexander Armstrong for $5 per week with interest (the current bank building dates back to 1886). In 1865 Johnnie Hill founded an iron works at 11 East Second Street which become known as Hill's Iron Works from 1865 to 1870 when it was sold to Jethro Gibbs who renamed it Messrs Gibbs & Company from 1870-1875; then Mr Gibbs' Iron Works from 1975-1980 before going bankrupt and being liquidated by creditors in 1980. In 1898 Wm Ladd purchased land east of US Route 3 along Third Street between Highways 19 and 23 for construction of a Smelting Plant No 2 (now part of GateHouse Mall) on behalf of Ewing Electric Manufacturing Company Limited where he also built the first smelter plant west of the Mississippi River This plant produced pig iron until 1941 when it closed due to World War II shortages caused by war production elsewhere in America although some remains are still standing today within GateHouse mall property adjacent to American Eagle Outfitters store adjacent to Menard's grocery store adjacent to Sears Tower adjoining IMAX theatre adjoining Macy's department store adjoining Steeleye Clothing Village under new ownership that includes plans for redevelopment including retail/office uses including an ethanol refinery that would process corn oil into gasoline

Willoughby was a town in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,581 at the 2000 census. The name is derived from Willoughby Creek. In 1814, the area that would become Willoughby was part of the Northwest Territory formed by the United States after its acquisition of Louisiana from France. When Ohio became a state in 1821, it included parts of what are now Beavercreek and Strongsville counties. In 1827, Willoughby incorporated as a town. The first settler in Willoughby Township was David Wright on December 5, 1827. The townsite lay east of present-day Mentor on the shore of Lake Erie near where Key Bank and Quarry Beaches now stand. A sawmill operated here until 1840 when it was replaced by a gristmill which continued to run until 1862 when it burned down due to an ice storm; this mill is still standing today at 4145 Euclid Avenue in Mentor proper. There were three churches located in Willoughby: First Methodist (1828), Second Methodist (1836), and Third Presbyterian (1837). In 1830, when Methodists pulled out of Cleveland because they felt persecuted there by evangelical Baptists led by John Wesley's son Charles Wesley, some members moved to Willoughby and founded what would become known as "the First Methodist Church." In 1840, Rev James Gibbons organized a school for African Americans called Ebenezer Baptist School which he named after Ebenezer Baptist pastor Elijah Hicks who had been killed two years earlier while preaching at Mansfield Friends Meetinghouse west of Akron in Painesville Township outside Cleveland; Hicks' parents had property in Willoughby township adjacent to their home on North Main Street north of East Market Place where their children attended school also until about 1915 or so according to one source but according to another source it stopped around 1870 or so although there may have been another Ebenezer Baptist School operating during this time too somewhere along these lines - EBENEZER BAPTIST SCHOOL WAS IN WILOUGHBY TOWNSHIP FROM 1840 TO ABOUT 1915 OR SO According to one source though Ebenezer Baptist School stopped around 1870 or so
