The name "Willoughby" originated in 1795 when John Willoughby purchased land here from a Native American chief for $4 per acre (the equivalent of about $ today). Willoughbys were among those who founded Mansfield Township in 1819 and their mills became one of Columbiana County's leading economic engines until the late 19th century. In 1827 they erected a wooden frame courthouse which still stands within easy walking distance of their home today; it has been restored to its original condition and is used as a museum. In 1857 James Hennepin opened what would become Columbus' first grocery store on Main Street in Willoughby; he later moved to 712 Second Avenue where he continued to operate an important mercantile enterprise until his death in 1905. The first settler in Willoughby was John Willoughby who arrived in 1788 from England. He founded a log cabin near the current site of the city and named his settlement after himself, Williamstown in honor of his father-in-law, John Johnston (1724-1792). John's grandson James Johnston built a sawmill and gristmill on the Scioto River just upstream from where Willoughby now stands. These mills provided both essential economic infrastructure for early settlers and also helped improve water quality for local villagers. By 1800, some 12 families lived within one mile of what would become Willoughby proper - an area that still includes much of downtown today! In 1815, when the village became a township under statehood, John Williamson served as its first president. During this time period Ohio saw successive waves of Native American raids against white settlements throughout central Appalachia so Williamson decided to build a wall along the Scioto River to deter these attacks and also protect his own community from attack by hostile Indians. This barrier remains extant today as part of downtown’s boundaries! In 1831 Township trustees voted to rename their township “Willoughby” after President Jackson’s birthplace – Jackson Place west of Cincinnati – because they felt that name better represented their settlement than “Ohio Township” which originally had been given to it by General George Washington during his military campaign against Great Britain in 1775! On July 8th1831 residents voted overwhelmingly (78%) to change their name back to “WilloughBY” after rejecting an earlier proposal to change it back again to “Jackson Place”! An influx of Scandinavian immigrants began arriving in earnest beginning around 1830 and soon many stores were open selling everything from clothing to canned goods! Norwegian men worked at local mills while women took care of children until education became available for them starting around 1840; thereafter they started working outside the home altogether becoming known as "the common women." Masons played an important role in early development here too serving as builders and carpenters whose skill set quickly proved useful on various projects such as public works or designing new churches or schools! One notable Mason was Andrew Gamble who designed two large Congregational churches here including one that still stands today – Stroudsburg Presbyterian Church (now First Baptist) – one which is also headquarters for neighboring Williamsburg Municipal Airport!. A post office opened at WILLOUGHBY on November 15th1844 under name OFILEYVILLE POINT but changed its name again three years later TO PERFECT MUNICIPAL RECORD ON APRIL 2ND1846 AFTER EARLY COLUMBUS VILLAGE COOPERATIVE PUSHED FOR THE NAME BEING MORE ACCEPTED BY THE PUBLIC IN THAT AREA!! Today PERFECT MUNICIPAL RECORD Still stands proud next door (to Stroudsburg Presbyterian Church) at 511 N Main Street!!!
