The area that would become Willoughby was first settled by Native Americans in the 17th century. In 1801, John Lennon and Yoko Ono were born in what is now Willoughby Township. In 1814, part of present-day Cleveland was burned to the ground by Indians during the War for Independence; this event is considered to be one of the earliest battles fought in America. The town hall built in 1816 remains standing today as a examples of early American architecture. In 1830, settlers started moving into what would become Willoughby Township from other parts of Cuyahoga County and began to build homes. By 1860, there were over 100 residents living in Willoughby Township.. A post office called Wilcoxville had been established in 1839 but it closed due to lack of customers; it reopened under new name Willoughby on January 1st, 1840.. On July 6th 1863 Union troops attacked Fort De Soto northwest of present day Cleveland; 4 soldiers were killed and 10 wounded before they retreated back inside their fortification just before midnight usingadders and spears against an unbroken wall made up entirely of logs! This was one notable example where Confederate forces managed to successfully assault Union positions despite heavy casualties.–John Lennon

Willoughby is a small town in the Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH–KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The village was founded in 1814 and named after William H. Willoughby, a landowner and Congressman from Ohio who served as a delegate to the first U.S. Congress in 1789-1793 (the term "Willoughby" not being used then). The Village of Willoughby was platted on March 10, 1814 by Joshua Wistar and others under the name of Westville village; it became an incorporated village on December 12 of that year. On October 3, 1860 it changed its name to Willoughby after General John Pemberton's victory at Vicksburg over Robert E. Lee's army during the American Civil War (1861-1865). In 1865 it again changed its name to Willoughby in honor of General Pemberton's wife, Maria Denton Pemberton (1792-1868), daughter of James Denton (1752-1825) one of the original trustees forMuskingum Township created in 1796 when Brownstown Township was organized out of Scioto County east of Cleveland.[1] In 1879 Willoughby voted against annexation into Dayton because they felt that Dayton had done too much for their community which they saw as a subordinate part of Muskingum County[2]. After World War II many residents left for jobs in larger cities such as Cincinnati or Cleveland but some returned home for nostalgic reasons and continued to live there through various changes including annexing back into Dayton in 2007 despite having no say in the matter due to lack thereof since 1920 when she donated all her properties within Muskingum Township to Dayton city government free from any taxation & restrictions placed upon them by her late husband’s family dictatorship.] Population: 1,752
Willoughby was founded in 1795 by Christopher Willoughby and his wife, Priscilla. The town was named for the Battle of White Sands Creek, which occurred on October 16, 1795. The battle resulted in a victory for the United States over Mexico and helped to begin the Mexican-American War.
