Willoughby, Ohio is a town in Northwestern Ohio, United States. The population was 17,868 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Stark County. The first Europeans to visit Willoughby were two Dutch traders, Hendrick Hudson and Pieter Claesz van der Werf, on their way from Fort Christina to trade with the Miami Indians in 1614-1615. They camped near thenow abandoned village of Canandaigua on July 10, 1614 and built a small trading post there that served as headquarters for their explorations into what is now Erie and Niagara counties. A more permanent European settlement was founded by John Trumbull in 1790 when he purchased all of present-day Stark County from the Seneca Nation. He named his new township after Isaac Newton (1639-1727), one of his associates in Trinity College ( Cambridge, England). A millrace called Trumbull'sributory still runs through Willoughby center. Adams Township was organized in 1802 from portions of Trumbull's Township and became part of Stark County when it was created out of parts of Summit, Clinton and Medina Counties on November 3, 1802. It contained only 4 families; all but three moved away by 1840 when railroads arrived in Stark County looking for land to build lines eastward through those counties into Cincinnati and other big cities. In 1845 it took on 1,000 residents when part of Columbiana Township was annexed by Willoughby; but most people left again by 1860 when farms around Columbiana were taken over by farmers west of Cleveland Plainview Railroad tracks which led to name change for another reason: settlers found that Willoughby had lots more water than either Columbiana or Muskegon Heights! The last resident actually moved out during 1903 due to a lack of water supplies though parts may have returned during WWI .Nowadays there are just a few buildings remaining from early days including some churches which serve as community centers decades later!
