Mr. Binney sold binoculars and telescopes to farmers and other people who needed to see better at close range. By 1850, there were also stores selling optical products in Willoughby. The early settlers used binoculars for exploration and mapping purposes. They also bought them as gifts for friends and family members. By 1870, there were several businesses in Willoughby that sold optics products including an optician called Bigham & Smith which had a location on First Street between King and Washington Streets. This business was known for their high quality optics products and they served customers from Akron, Canton, Lima, Cleveland Heights, Elyria, North Olmsted and much of northeastern Ohio including Willoughby itself! In 1881, Mr. Binney died leaving his business to his son Amos Jr., who continued the operations until 1907 when he passed it down to his nephew Samuel J. Binney who operated it until 1954 when it was taken over by the current owner/operator-Willco Optical Co.- which is still in business today! In 1956 the company name was changed to Willis Optical Incorporated after Willis Glass Corporation became known for their glass production capabilities! In 1978 we started manufacturing our own lenses using a new technology- holographic coating! We continue to produce outstanding optics products today with an emphasis on customer satisfaction!
