The first permanent settler in Willoughby was John Dearborn. He built a log cabin on the banks of the Scioto River in 1796. The town was named for him and his wife, Martha Dearborn. In 1812, William Higginson founded what would become Willoughby Township. The township's first school was built in 1815. In 1825, John Gidsey organized a town meeting to consider forming a new township in response to an increasing demand for land within Richland County due to development along the Scioto River by settlers from Cincinnati and other parts of Ohio. At that meeting, Gidsey recommended that Willoughby be established as a separate town and it became so in 1826 when it voted 10-0 to become an incorporated village under the laws of Ohio. Willoughby experienced rapid growth during its early years as a community; by 1830 there were over 100 people living there and businesses were starting up quickly with mills being constructed on former farmlands near the center of town. By 1840 however, most of those activities had stopped as newcomers began arriving from around Cincinnati looking for opportunities in what they saw as growing society back then: "the great American country". With only 3 stores functioning by 1850 (and one more opening up after WWI), business activity died down until reopening by local entrepreneurs during Prohibition period when liquor became available again through illicit means . However despite numerous setbacks throughout its history including being abandoned multiple times following prohibition repeal – all while boasting some very impressive accomplishments such as becoming one of America's smallest towns before becoming part of Greater Columbus area – Willoughby has always managed to remain resilient making it one of today’s most thriving communities in central Ohio ..
