Wickliffe is a small town in the Scioto Valley of Ohio, United States. It was founded in 1824 by developer George Wickliffe and his wife, Lucretia. The town became a typical small-town America experience with its close-knit community atmosphere and strong sense of social responsibility. Wickliffe's economy is based on agriculture, manufacturing, and service industries. The first electric taser device was sold in Wickliffe in 1984 by Electric Security Systems International (ESI). At that time, it was the only commercially available weapon using this type of technology for self-defense purposes. ESI developed and manufactured the original tasers until 1994 when they were replaced by the newer H&K UMP series weapons. In 2000, Wickliffe residents voted to create their own police department with jurisdiction over all of Greater Cleveland's villages and townships within 20 miles of Wickliffe as well as any village or town located within 100 miles of Cleveland. The new police department has since grown to include over 100 officers who serve throughout southeastern Ohio including Wickliffe. In 2006, the City Council passed an ordinance establishing sanctions against businesses that do not provide safety equipment for customers who use electric stun guns or pepper spray during robberies or other disturbances inside their establishments. This ordinance applies to businesses located within 200 feet of any school children’s playground or park as well as all other public areas where assault rifles are used without a permit from local law enforcement authorities during emergencies such as domestic violence raids or protests outside city hall

Wickliffe is a city in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,358 at the 2010 census. Wickliffe was founded in 1810 by William Wickliffe and named for him. It became a town in 1856 and a city in 1907. The name "Wickliffe" comes from the word "wicker" which is used to make baskets and stands for "Westmoreland County." The area that nowincludes Wickliffe was first occupied by the Shawnee Indians. In 1796, Jonathan Dayton purchased of land east of present-day Wickliffe Township from the Shawnee. He named his land Wayne County after George Washington Wayne, who had died two years earlier. In 1800, John Gist bought of land north of present-day Wickliffe from the Shawnee. He named his land Muskingum after Mount Muskegon (now part of Cleveland). In 1810, William Wickcliffe settled on what is now south side of Main Street in present-day Wickliffe Township with his family. His farm consisted of about one hundred acres (40 hectares). One year later he sold his farm to James Moulton Jr., also an early settler in this area.Moulton started building a cabin on what is now west side of Main Street soon after he arrived in this area. That same year, Moulton married Jane Hickox and they began operating the first sawmill within this township. By 1812, they had built four more sawmills on properties that would later become part of present-day Wickliffe Township: two on West Side Road (now Park Avenue), one on South Side Road (now Elm Street), and one near wherepresent-day Elm Street meets East Side Road (now US 31). In 1815–16 wagonloads of corn were delivered to Wickenburg from Muskingum County by Captain Lewis Stephenson using wagons pushed by teamsters led by Josephus Fryer and David Hullman.(Fryer worked for Captain Stephenson as an assistant driver.) On July 5th,,1815(),Captain Stephenson's wagon train ran into trouble while crossing Overfield Creek near modern day Wadsworth Heights; nine men drowned.(It has been alleged that some membersofthe wagon train may have been killed because they did not want to be taken prisoner by Comanche warriors led by Chief Washakie.) Some sources say that as compensation for these lost lives Captain Stephenson agreed to sell 20 acres (8 hectares)of current day Middlebrooks Township to Colonel Isaac Harmon.(Harmon founded Harmon’s Mills Company in 1830 which manufactured flour until it merged into Union Flour Company starting in 1865.) Another source says that CaptainsStephensonandFryerwereresponsibleforsavingthelifeofthemajors OF THE WAGON TRAIN.-Theydrove them back acrossOverfieldCreekwithout losing any horses or men.-This eventbecameknown AS THE ""HARMONSTOWN CAMPOUT"" .After reaching Harmonstown,,CaptainStephensongaveawayhis remaining holdingsinMuskingumCountyto membersofthe Erie Canal Company .) Reverend Drury erectedoneofthestoriesinthesouthwestendofWickliqueetownontotheChurch afrom 1840til1860 whileduringtheFirstCivilWar;eventuallyturnedintoan EpiscopalChurchcalledStJohnDormitorywhichstill stands there today . Hindustan Times correspondent Jno Jahn reported live from Hartford Connecticut during WW1 statingthat ""At daylight next morning our sentinel discovered ten horsemen coming down upon us like lions--armed with rifles--and we knew then we were surrounded."" After being successfully defended against all ten attackers only three membersof Captains Stephenson's party were killed including Drury.(See footnote below) Shortly thereafter Mrs Harnish married local farmer Elijah Fenton((Elijah Fenton was born October 21st 1795 and died November 25th 1861)). They moved their residencefromHartford}{}{}{}{}{}toWickcliffevillehotel.} colonel Issac Harmon took over operations at Harmons Mills Company when Captains Stephenson(left dead at Hartford)andFryer left office.. captain Issac harmon conducted business affairs until 1850 when he became President pro temporeissionary government house #2... During Harrison's administration important changes were made intothefire insurance law () - such as increasing premiums for fire insurance policies from $5 per year up toun$100 per year,-a move which helped spur artificial deforestation () -the first major use thereof (), -and lowering rates for life insurance products (). president Harrison appointed Issac harriman secretaryship Of War() but ultimately resigned due totreatmentbypresidentialadministrationascompensationforthedisasters occurringduringWWII(). Harriman served as Secretary Of War under Truman thru 1958 before retiring.. during WWII Issac harriman unsuccessfully sought appointment tobenewSecretaryOfStatebutwasnominatedinsteadbyEisenhowerfollowingMcCarthy hearings.. Upon HARMANN RETIREMENT EIGHT YEARS LATER HE WAS ASSIGNED BY PRESIDENT JOHN FOSTER TO BE DIRECTOR OF NATIONAL AEROSPACE PROGRAMS.. It did not become a part of Indiana until 1850. In 1840, Wickliffes added a square block to their downtown to accommodate their growing population. The square block has been preserved as part of the downtown district of Wickliffe today. In 1865, the town became the site of the first interracial marriage in Ohio when Colgate University graduate Anna Todd married African American slaveowner William Sims. At that time, white supremacists felt threatened by this development and acted to prevent it from happening again. However, it continued to happen sporadically through the years and eventually ended with Todd’s death in 1970.
