Wickliffe, Ohio is a small town in the Unitarian-Universalist Association of America (UUA) region that straddles the border of Clearwater and Geauga counties. The UUA was founded in 1892 by Reverend George Perrin Wickliffe, who served as its first pastor. Wickliffe is located about 25 miles west of Cleveland on Lake Erie. Despite this setback, interest in scopes slowly resumed after World War II; this interest culminated with the establishment of the American Scopedge Society (ASS) in 1960. Wickliffe is the county seat of Muskingum County and home to the Muskingum University campus. The first white settler in what is now Wickliffe was James Wickline who arrived in 1796. In 1812, David Fenton established a log cabin on the banks of the Scioto River. He named his settlement after Sir John Clerk Mackintosh, 2nd Baronet (1768-1841), an English nobleman and Governor of Bengal (1802-04). In 1824, Daniel Boone discovered valuable land near present day Wickliffe on which he built a log cabin and named it in his honor. The town began to form when individuals from nearby towns started settle there around this time. By 1830, most of what is today Wicklowe had been founded including many houses on Wadsworth Avenue which still stands today as one of downtown's oldest districts. In 1832, Drury Lane Baptist Church was organized with Reverend Jeremiah Blackburn as its first pastor. From this church grew much later Newtown Baptist Church located just east of downtown and Stroudsburg Presbyterian Church located south of town along Wadsworth Avenue until they merged into one congregation in 1955 under Pastor Averill Earle Sr.. In 1840, Isaac Brockway surveyed three tracts of land that would become modern day Muskingum Township including part of what is now Wicklowe; he named these tracts "Wicklowe" after his father-in-law Sir John Clerk Mackintosh's estate there some years earlier. The first schoolhouse in what is now Wickliffe was erected by Mrs.(name withheld) for students residing within her parishioners' homes during the early 1800s; it burned down about 1850 but was replaced by another schoolhouse about 1870 which still stands today next to Second Baptist Church on Wadsworth Ave.. It then served as both public and private schools until it burned down again in 1904 but was replaced by First Methodist Episcopal District School No 1 which still stands today across from Knox PresbyterianChurch on Market Street near I-71 exit 40A - becoming one of only two remaining historical structures left standing from that era in central Muskingum County! Also serving as district school were Wickenburg Academy (now known as Third Square Academy) founded 1909 at 204 E High Street (just east off State Route 11) before merging into East Kentwood Public Schools District #1 in 2002; also serving grades K through 8th were Stanton Elementary School opened 1927 adjacent to ThirdSquare Academy before combined with East Kentwood Public Schools District #1 becoming Stanton Middle/High School pursuant to DEEP 52710ff when Merrimack Valley Local School District Dissolved effective Dec 1 2009 via merger withDEEP 52710ff . Finally Hightower Elementary & Middle School closed 2006 followed by North Union Elementary & Middle School 2003 before finally closing down due to lack enrollment following moves to other areas throughout their tenure . Today all buildings are used for apartment tenants or office space! As one can see from this cursory description, life changed dramatically around here pretty rapidly starting with little more than rudimentary beginnings... All told we have over 100 years worthof history associated with us here!!!

He named his land "Wickliffe" after his old home town of Westwick in Sussex, England. In 1821, Isaac Brock founded Brock's Mills on a tract of land that he had purchased from David Farnum. In 1916, Henry Clay Frick chose Wickliffe as his place of permanent residence while he resided at nearby Seneca Falls during the American Revolution. After Frick's death in 1920, his widow donated all of her assets to help support the city of Cleveland's efforts to restore its fallen infrastructure and become self-sufficient again following World War I. During World War II, many Germans were arrested and held here for forced labor on US munitions plants; some are still documented as residents today. The government released most of them by 1951 but several remain incarcerated today at what is now known as Buckeye Regional Jail located off North Sixth Street in downtown Wickcliffe. Many businesses have been located here over time including: First National Bank (now Wells Fargo), Hoyt Chevrolet & Local Ford Dealerships (closed down 2007), Florist Shop (closed down 2011), LoanMart (closed down 2006) and Wawa Coffee & Donuts (closed down 2013).
