It is north of Mentor on the Scioto River and east of Findlay on I-71/I-680; it shares a border with Scioto County to the south and west. According to the United States Census Bureau, Wickliffe has a total area of , all land. As of the census of 2000, there were 1,619 people, 548 households, and 409 families residing in the town. The population density was 452 people per square mile (173/km²). There were 634 housing units at an average density of 203 per square mile (79/km²). Wickliffe is a city in Mahoning County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,922 at the 2010 census. Wickliffe is the second most populous city in Mahoning County and the largest town in the county. The first settler in Wickliffe was Nicholas Wickliffe, who arrived on May 12, 1810. He was the son of John Wickcliffe and his wife Lydia (Tucker). The first frame house built in what is now Wickliffe was erected by Nicholas Wickcliffe on July 24, 1830. It stood on present-day Elm Street and had a gable roof with five dormers. In 1834 another family moved to Wicklciffe from Bainbridge Township. They were named Pemberton and they raised six children: three daughters named Sarah, Jane and Hester; one son named Nicholas; one son-in-law named Ebenezer; and one daughter-in-law named Margaret Pemberton (Hatcher). On December 10, 1840 an act of the General Assembly of Ohio provided for a new town to be formed out of part of Defiance Township east of Canfield Road established as Athens Township by order dated October 9th previous year due to increasing population growth within that township and Clarion Hills township lying southward theretoon being too thinly populated for any general town government to be effective without incorporation therein or else becoming mere agricultural settlements without industry or commerce proper being conducted thereabouts. Accordingly a meeting of the board of trustees duly called for March 3rd next ensuing convened at Mr Fenton's storehouse in said village met with Messrs Wm Brougham & Lewis Esqrs Joint Commissioners for said purpose appointed by them after consultation among themselves agreed upon & ordered accordingly Letters Patent issued accordingly naming Mr Fenton Town Clerk & Messrs Wm Brougham & Lewis Esqr Town Surveyors Warden etc... After much debate it appeared that it would not be possible to carry into effect this proposed ordinance so determinedly recommended by their Majesties' Government they reassembled late last night pursuant to adjournment voted unanimously against& rejected every proposition offered which resulted in no public execution taking place during yesterday morning... On motion made by Mayor John Fitzpatrick it was Resolved That since no public execution could take place yesterday morning owing principally to lack of forces available therefor This Body submit its objections thereto To His Excellency Governor Harrison who will cause an investigation to be made into the matter And if foundworthy he will take such action as may seem necessary either incorporating or dissolving this body according as shall appeareth To him good discretion should then ensue
