Wickliffe, Ohio is a small town in the Noble Valley of Northeast Ohio. The community was founded in 1825 by Colonel John Wickliffe and his wife Sarah. It became a borough in 1898 and a village in 1907. Wickliffe has a population of about 1,500 people. The town has one school, three churches, an arena, two businesses, several residences and a few dozen non-residential properties. The first rifle stocks were built here in Wickliffe between 1825 and 1830. These stocks were made from oakum (a type of hickory) which was chopped into boards about 2 feet wide and 12 feet long. They were used to hold rifles during the early 1800s when rifle powder was not available at local stores or Bulletsville Arsenal on the Scioto River where firearms were manufactured for the American army. In 1847 Captain John Aiken of the United States Marine Corps ordered twenty crates of French surplus rifles from Chateauguay Arsenal near Montreal for use by United States Marines during the Mexican-American War. Captain Aiken also ordered fifty more rifles from this same arsenal after he discovered that bullets produced at Chateauguay could be fired with British arms without any problems. The first settlement in what is now Wickliffe was made on December 12, 1827 by three men named James Wickliffe, Nicholas Cook and Ebenezer Cook. They built a log cabin on a small island in the Ottawa River. On July 3, 1830 the Village of Wickliffe was organized with a meetinghouse and community store. In 1834 the village incorporated as a township. In 1836 construction began on what would become the first public school in town – called "Fenton School". It was also founded as an academy for girls to learn English and receive formal education like those available to boys at local schools at that time. By 1840 there were six schools in town: two forNormal residents and four for settlers from other parts of Muskegon COUNTY who had moved into Wickliffe during that year's agricultural depression brought about by economic factors such as low prices for foodstuffs and production depressed by competition from neighboring towns similar in size but with more advanced infrastructure (e.g., Dearborn). By 1860 there were twelve schools; one each for Normal residents and settlers from other parts of Muskegon County; one “for all”; one high school; two churches (Methodist and Lutheran); one blacksmith shop; three stores (two general stores, one hardware store); four residences—one family occupied every house except two which stood vacant until 1902 when they were sold to Main Street Electric Light Company employees who added an extra bedroom to every house on their lot; seventeen acres (eleven hectares) outside of town plat limits east of U-shaped street running through it - all used excepting three small lots west side where farmers leased land back to city officials until 1905 when they became part of new City Limits Trust lands acquired through annexation process - these are now part of Presque Isle fields off US-131 south/west of town limits One important early civic event took place on October 24, 1846 when citizens assembled at Fenton School seeking approval to form a village government with civil service requirements similar to those then existing in nearby Dearborn Township while still under consideration by Township Board members chaired by William Fenton Sr.. The vote failed 8-2 due primarily to lack of support from normal Residents who wanted no political representation within their own Townspeople body unlike those enjoyed by their brethren living within Dearborn Township which boasted elected officials including postmaster Winfield Scott as well as several trustees responsible forStreet lighting Improvements & Drainage etc... For many years following this significant event villagers conducted elections using secret ballot only known among themselves i.e., not reported back to either Township or Board members... A fire destroyed most or all buildings on May 7th 1886 just before sunrise caused $5000 damage typical during fires then raging around central Michigan leaving little chance that anything could be salvaged given insurance rates then being much higher than present day values... The cause remains unknown but may have been arson motivated by rage over loss of property or money lost invested during previous ownership In 1896 Second National Bank opened doors permanently located next door across main street after predecessors First National Bank building burned down November 15th 1895....After bank opened Dr Charles Hargrave became its President serving until his death in 1915 ....In 1907 new blockhouse replaced old courthouse which served as jail from 1800s until 1960s.....blocks have since been removed making way for modern day University Park Shopping Center
