Wickliffe is a small town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown–Stark Metropolitan Statistical Area. Wickliffe is situated on the Scioto River. Wickliffe was founded in 1796 by John Wickliffe and his family. The first settler in what is now Wickliffe was John Cookseye, who came to the area from Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania in 1798. In 1814, David Smithwick moved to Wickliffe from Union Township and built a gristmill on the Scioto River. In 1819, John Dyer bought the mill from Smithwick and named it Dyer's Mill after himself. In 1825, George Meigs purchased land south of Dyer's Mill and started to build a sawmill on the river. By 1830, Meigs had built a large sawmill which he named "Meigs Mills". On October 25 of that year, Meigs mills went into operation for the first time and produced lumber for local homes and businesses. Over time, other mills were added to Meigs Mills including another sawmill (the present-day "Lancaster Mill"), a gristmill (the present-day "Gillett & Co."), an oven (the present-day "Heinrichs Bros."), two barns (the present-day "Boyd & Hennessee" and "Fenimore Bros.", both now defunct), three blacksmith shops (now known as Justus Hattie's", Harry Fenimore's", Elmer Boyd's"mith shops") and four cottages (now known as Quality Inn). In 1836 William Tilton settled in what is now Wickliffe along with his wife Lydia Tilton Heckelman Tilton along with their five children: Lyda Beardsley Tilton married George Crampton; Anna Beardsley married James Byrnes; Mary Beardsley married Samuel Mifflin; Josephine Beardsley married Edward Pemberton; Eunice Beardsley married Nathan Buehler Jr.. The village plat did not come out until 1840 so we don't have exact dates for when everything actually began but we can assume that things started pretty much Immediately after WmTilton arrived especially since there wasn't anything else around then apart from some dead animals left over from previous settlers etc etc... so its likely thats when things really got going! anyways back to story... After WmTilton arrival alot of people started moving into town lots Lot #1 being just north of Main Street goes all the way up to where Second Avenue meets Third Street today still owned by same family today though no one lives there anymore! lot #2 right next door also went all the way up to 2nd Ave now owned by different family too!! But most importantly LOT #3!!!!!! That spot still remains unoccupied today but has been used recently as a dumpster or something like that!!! So basically within 1 ½ years or so most everyone who lived in town had set down roots here! Now lets move on... From WmTilletons arrival till about 1840 there wasn't really much happening except for folks dying or moving away either its hard to say because we only have limited records from that time period! However around 1840 some new settlers moved in called: Jameson Wright which happened right before prominent lawyer General Thompson bought some land east of town later that year= so maybe thats when things REALLY took off huh? Anyway back to our story... About this timecomes another big change happening in town lots changed hands again including finaly getting rid of Jameson Wright family member mentioned earlier! So basically pretty much everything major happened during this time period BUT nobody knows exactly WHEN IT ALL STARTED LOL!!
