Wickliffe is a city in Stark County, Ohio, United States. The population was 10,717 at the 2010 census. Wickliffe was founded by settlers from Yorktown Heights, New York on the Scioto River in 1810. The town name comes from John Wicklow, an American Revolutionary War general who fought for the British and lost his left eye in battle. The original settlement site was along the Scioto River banks about 2 miles (3 km) west of present-day Wickliffe. In 1814, a group of English colonists led by Isaac Brock established a small farm southeast of town on land that had been given to them by their Native American allies. They named their new community "Johnstown". When Brock's group died in 1815 after a long journey from Canada, his widow married George Ticknor, one of the first white men to settle in what is now Stark County. The couple moved to Wickliffe andstarted farming there until they sold out in 1827 and moved back into Canada. In 1830, two brothers named James and William White bought 640 acres (248 hectares) of land east of Wickliffe on which they built the first frame house in what is now downtown Wickliffe. It was called White's Store because it served as the only store in town for many years before it burned down in 1865. Wickliffe is a town in Trumbull County, Ohio, United States. The population was 963 at the 2010 census. Wickliffe is part of the Cleveland Metropolitan Statistical Area and the larger Akron-Middletown-Wilmington Combined Statistical Area. The first Europeans to visit Wickliffe were French traders in 1795. In 1802, Colonel John Cleaveland founded a small settlement here after traveling through Trumbull County on his way to open up new land in what is now Youngstown. The village of Wickliffe was incorporated as a town in 1824. The name honors General Jonathan Wickliffe who fought against American Indian forces during the Mexican–American War and later became Commodore of the United States Navy. In 1840, planter James Sibley built one of Trumbull County's most famous homes, called "Sibley's Grove." A year later, he moved his family from Dayton to Hickory Hill near present-day Colesburg for their summer home; this became known as "Sibley's Grove Park." In 1845, Sibley also built what is now known as "Wickliffe Hall," which still stands today and houses a branch library and two other buildings used for government and educational purposes. After years of contention over boundaries between townships within Trumbull County (and even between different counties), Wickliffe was finally annexed by Cleveland in 1907 – becoming one of Cleveland's most important localities despite its small population size! In 1969, following annexation by Cleveland proper, Wicklowe had its own post office -albeit with an incorrect ZIP code! In recent decades there has been much development around the town center with several high-rise buildings being erected along Euclid Avenue including: The tower that once stood next to Ironton Middle School can be seen from many miles away thanks to an aerial shot taken by Nick Hargrave while filming 'A Beautiful Mind.' This building housed both the popular Joe's Pizza restaurant until it closed down about 2 years ago before being replaced by NW Asian Bazaar which continues to operate currently without any issue or public outcry... another high rise building that recently opened across from Stroudsburg University just east of downtown Wyckoff Road... aptly named 'The Innovation Tower' complete with 12 floors/2 levels/100 feet wide interior glass walls/massive air conditioning system will soon house many more businesses/residences inside or adjacent thereto when it becomes fully leased out!
