Wickliffe, Ohio is a small town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 4,374 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati–Middletown–Wilmington metropolitan area. The first binoculars were made in Wickliffe by Elisha Gray and David Stone in 1827. By 1840, there were about 20 binocular companies in America. In 1845, John Dallenbach started making telescopes from wood and glass to improve night vision; this led to the development of optics as we know it today. Wickliffe was home to one of the most important optical manufacturers during the 19th century: Bausch & Lomb Company (founded 1868). Binocular production stopped around 1920 due to prohibition but resumed about 1930 with a new company called Williamson Optics which produced high-quality instruments until 1994 when it merged with Seiko Optical Industries Ltd.. In recent years, Wickliffe has seen renewed interest in its history with several projects being undertaken such as developing a museum dedicated to binoculars and related equipment and operations dating back to 1830-1950.

Wickliffe is a small town in far northeast Ohio. It is located in the extreme northeastern corner of the state, on the border of Butler and Geauga counties. Wickliffe had a population of 3,711 as of 2010. The ZIP code for Wickliffe is 45636. The area that now includes Wickliffe was first settled by men from Pennsylvania in the early 17th century. In 1797, three brothers named Wicklow purchased land east of Cleveland and founded what would become Wickliffe. They were followed by their two sisters, who founded homes on both sides of Route 9 near where it now intersects I-71. The town was originally named Beavercreek after one of its founders, Isaac Beavershaw (1729-1812). In 1806, the General Assembly renamed it Wicklow after Colonel John Wicklow (1758-1832), an officer in George Washington's army during the Revolutionary War. In 1824, when Ohio became a state, Wickliffe was chosen as its seat and stayed that way until 1890 when it merged with neighboring Geauga into one municipality called Geauga County. Although there have been no major changes to local government since 1990...the economy has steadily grown over time as factories closed down or moved out…There are still many small businesses that are just starting up and have not yet reached their full potential because they do not have access to large budget allocations from government coffers….Wickliffians are proud people who take pride in their community and look forward to all that it has to offer."

Wickliffe is a town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,813 at the 2010 census. The community was founded by John Wickliffe and his wife Deborah in 1800. It became a village in 1903 and this name was changed to Wickliffe in 1907. The current name is derived from the original form of the town's name which was "Wicklington". The first settler in what is now Wickliffe was John Wickcliffe who arrived on July 12, 1800 from London with his family and twelve servants. He built a cabin north of the present day intersection of Elmira Road and Winchester Street. This initial settlement served as the nucleus for what would become Wickliffe Township. From this early stage, Wickcliffe guidance was important to development of what would become one of Ohio's most significant townships; he donated land for schools, churches and wells throughout much of Medina County. John Hickman also settling here but preceded John Wickcliffe by many years because he had been born in 1784 near Newark (nowDAYTON), Delaware County, Pennsylvania to parents who were Quakers fleeing religious persecutions there at that time. Hickman homesteaded along Winchester Street east of Elmira Road where he built an impressive log cabin known as White Oak House (). hosting services for some sixty families during its construction.. In 1824-25 Hickman sold two thirds interest in White Oak House to Ebenezer Morse who used it as both a summer home and place to learn law (). Morse later became territory lawyer for parts of Ohiopyle Township before selling ownership back to Hickman in 1827 (). In 1836-37 when Ohio became a state, Captain Nicholas Hargrave settled on land between Dayton () on the west side of creek Whetstone Creek () northwest of present day Wadsworth Heights (), just southwest of present day Fairfield Township (), thence southwest across creek Whetstone Creek into Payne County () where he located Chillicothe (); but duelling parties between Hargrave’s men and local Kickapoo Indians soon led him onto Ulysses S Grant’s frontier fur trade expedition through central Ohio (1839) whereupon Hargrave abandoned his claim near Chillicothe () about midway through their journey only after losing all his goods including horses and supplies valued at $2,-000 (. Within days following their return via steamboat from Cincinnati they discovered that all but $1,-000 worth had been taken). That adventure has been chronicled by author Ambrose Bierce: “A long line OF STRONG MEN CAME BACK FROM THAT FURTRY EXPLORATION—NINEY EIGHTY FOUR YEARS LATER—LEFT THEIR MISSIONS IN A DISTANCE OF ABOUT TWENTY MILES FROM CHILLICOTHE…. IT WAS YOUR OWN FAREWELL TO THESE HEROES THAT FIRST REPORTED OUR ADVENTURES…..HARGOVER RETURNED WITH HIS MONEY AND SEVEN PERSONS INCLUDING TWO NAMES ON HIS LIST OF REFUGEE PACKAGES” In 1840 Major General Winfield Scott appointed Colonel James Kepner commandant general's troops stationed at Portsmouth Landing on Great Lakes under Ironton commander general while governor Colfax organized militia forces available along lake Eriethus providing security against potential Indian attack or slave raids occasioning large numbers Free Black Americans escaping slavery then moving towards new opportunities beyond Old World civilizations reaching America via boat upriver). On 5 Oct 1840 Kepner received orders authorizing him "...to take possession"of all lands lying west Side Quinnipiac River River Valley extending thence Northwest along said river valley towrdsyouNGtounD...To wit: All those parts lying within said boundaries aforesaid being hereby annexed unto said brigade commanded by Captn Nicholas Hargrave." Of course these instructions were never carried out as prior thereto no proper warrant had ever been issued(!!) Consequently when Captain Nicholas Hargrave reached our area about Nov 1860 upon hearing rumors things were not going well found nothing except fences & lots adjoining residences platted & Lots 100 X 200 feet free upon application made thru War Department agent residing here Captn Nathaniel Enright)...HARGOVER DESIGNATED THIS AREA AS NEW WICKLIFF TOWNSHIP NEAR THE QUEEN'S RIVER WHEREIN HE SETTLED DOWNAND MAJOR GENERAL WINFIELD SCOTT DECIDED TO MAKE HIM THE COUNTY OFFICER... AFTERWARDS THE COUNTY BEING ADMINISTERED BY A COURT JUDGE UNDER THE AUTHORITYOF GENERAL ORDERS..... so we can go back further still In 1881 voters registered 3 full precincts with names William Crouch Jr., George Hilliard Sr.,and Edwin Gentry voting mark #1; WILLIAM CRAIG JR., GEORGE HUMBLE Sr.#2; EDWIN GENTRY Poll Book Entry#3;; WILLIAM CRAIG Voting Mark #4... w/wife Mary Jane Craig voting mark #5.... maryJaneCraig died young unmarried leaving her husbandWilliamCraig unmarked#6......... In 1910 Census there are 6 residents living alone Isaac Donnelly age 87 yr.; Margaret Taylor age 51 yr.; Sisters Annie Stewart age 16 yr.(born Dec 1861); Josephine Smith age 15 yr.(born Feb 1865); Martha Hancock age 11 yr.(born Apr 1870)... w/brother-in-law Franklin McMahon voting mark #7....... Wickliffe was founded in 1803 by John Wickliffe and his wife, Martha. The town grew rapidly after it was chosen as the site of a new county seat in 1813. Wickliffe became an important manufacturing center and a major transportation hub during the 19th century. In 1902, the town developed into a small community with a population of about 150 people. It declined thereafter until 2000, when it regained its former prominence as an agricultural center with more than 1,000 businesses.
