Wickliffe is a small town in Hardin County, Ohio, United States. The population was 4,337 at the 2010 census. Wickliffe is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The original name for Wickliffe was Westside. Wickliffe was founded by General James Wickliff and his family in 1810 as a log cabin settlement on the west bank of the Maumee River. The town grew rapidly after it became one of the site of the Battle of Fallen Timbers in 1813, when American forces defeated an Indian force led by Tecumseh. In 1830, Wickliffe incorporated as a village and changed its name to Wickliffe Township. In 1836, settlers from Scranton moved into what is now eastern Wicklowe Township and began to develop their land around what is now downtown Wicklowe. By 1840, most of present-day Hardin County had been annexed by Dayton; however, parts of western Hardin County remained unincorporated until 1845 when they were made part of Eckert Township under that county's first constitution and laws. That year also saw the founding of Wyandotte College (now Wright State University) in nearby Paris Heights; it would become one of America's largest coeducational universities. The post-Civil War period saw increased development in Wicklowe with several large hotels being built along Third Street between Main and Elm Streets during this time including The Gilded Age Hotel which still stands today as one of Dayton's most iconic landmarks. It wasn't until about 1925 that brick streets were laid down through out much of centralwicklowe township making it easier for residents to get around town without having to go down 3rd Street which has since become home to several stores including JCPenney and Macy's among many others over the years

Wickliffe was founded in 1817 by John Wickliffe and his family. It became a village in 1879 and a city in 1912. Wickliffe is named after Colonel James Wicklcote (1792-1846), an officer in the American Revolution who served as colonel of militia at Greenville, South Carolina before moving to Cincinnati to become justice of the peace there. In 1847 Wickcliffee induced General David Thayer to make this move from Greenville to take up arms against Mexico on the pretext that he had received information that Mexican forces were about to invade California; when they did not arrive until two years later, Wickcliffee was proved right and Thayer abandoned his expedition.
Wickliffe was founded in 1788 by James Wickliffe and his wife, Deborah. The town was named for Wicklow County, Ireland. In 1812, the United States government acquired land in what is now Wickliffe Township from the British government. The township was established on the land in 1815. When the area became a part of Ohio in 1800, Wickliffe was one of the original townships.
