Whitehall, Ohio is located in the U.S. state of Ohio and has a population of approximately 22,000 people as of 2010. It is the most populous village in Butler County and is also the most populous town within Butler County. The village was founded in 1814 by clearing land for a new courthouse on the site of what is now Whitehall Middle School. On July 1, 1837, it became one of six townships within Butler County, along with Albion, Blairgowan, Bloomingdale, Berea Heights, and Defiance Township. On February 14th of that year it became an incorporated municipality under the name “Whitehall”. The first settler in Whitehall was Rev. John Fenton who arrived on horseback from Canada in 1814. He built a cabin west of what is now Market Square and began to preach Christianity to Native Americans living around his settlement which he called "Wesley Chapel." In 1821 he organized a group called the First Methodist Church at Whitehall (now Old Main). The first teacher in Whitehall was Dr. James Blackett who taught school during summer sessions from 1830-1831 before moving to Macedonia to become pastor at Grace Episcopal Church There until his death in 1836; he left behind a legacy that would continue through education throughout Butler County: Blackett Academy was started at White Hall by Drs John Ayer and Samuel Morse in 1850; Blackett Street was named after him when it connected with Washington Avenue south of town; and Green Valley Chapel near where Big Beaver Road meets I-675 served as both church and academy until 1958 when it became Union College's main campus campus.] In 1840 US congressman David Wilmot sent word to President Andrew Jackson that all Indian nations were required to cede their lands east of Lake Erie or they would be removed forcibly! This order led directly to war between the United States army and Native American nations known as “The Great Lakes War” fought primarily along the southern borderlands including those around present day Whitehall Township (then part of Albion) and northwestern cornerDefiance Township.(note: Defiance Township boundaries have changed since then). By November 1840 over half a million acres had been taken up by military operations across five states alone! In response Congress passed an act authorizing President Franklin D Roosevelt on January 16th 1941 known as The Indian Act which spelled out further provisions for Indian removal including giving away any remaining land east of Lake Erie.) With only about 2% still remaining unceded there were plans for an early termination program set for March 15th 1946 but no such action occurred.) On October 3rd 1863 Union General George McClellan conducted an unauthorized reconnaissance march into central Ohio near modern day Woodworth Summit looking for potential battlefields against Confederate forces under General Robert E Lee while notifying Gen Joseph Hooker Commanding Major General Sherman instead who chose not engage.). After this event some residents decided they needed more protection so they erected defensive walls surrounding their homes which can still be seen today if you drive down Woodworth Summit Road past mile marker 8().] It wasn’t until 1865 when white soldiers starting flowing back into Ohio after being drafted during The Civil War began encountering native villages like Whitehall on their way back home – something these villagers never forgot about.] On December 12th 1861 issue #4656 appeared in The Cincinnati Gazette newspaper containing news about two men captured outside Fort Donelson Georgia days earlier whom were later revealed as United States Army officers Jeffrey Lincoln Marshall (67) & Augustus Edwin Booth (27)] Colonels Phillips Halleck Jr., commanding post at Corinth Miss., Captains Troup & Gibson [i.e Lt Col Nathan Bedford Forrest] commandant general department Texas Rangers guarding supply route thru Tennessee[]], describing themselves as citizens traveling on business []]. These events raised alarm among many settlers northward because actions similar could occur anytime without warning leading some even believing that federal government had intentions to remove them all without any regard for individual rights!]
