Gun swivels were first patented in 1884 by George Washington Carver. They became popularized after being featured in the movie "The Guns of Navarone" in 1941. The gun swivels were originally designed as a way to make it easier for soldiers to get their guns turned around during combat. The original gun swivels consisted of two metal circles that rotated about a common axle. The circles wouldzb together and rotate, providing a degree of torque that could be used to turn the barrel of a firearm. Whitehall is a small town in the forests of southern Ohio. The population was 6,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Akron-Canton, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white settler in Whitehall was George Stephenson, who arrived on July 6, 1814. Stephenson built the first toll road in what is now Whitehall Township. He named it "Washington" after his home state in the United States of America. The first post office was established in 1816 and named "New Albany". The name changed to "Whitehall" in 1851 when it became part of Summit County. In 1875, James Jernigan erected a sawmill and grist mill on the east side of Route 422 north of Whitehall village. This mill continued to be used until 1978 when it was demolished to make way for a new school building. In 1902, John Denny began producing shale oil from shale deposits located about three miles northeast of Whitehall village on an abandoned military road near present day US 50/421 (the old routing for I-79). Denny sold his interest in the oil production company to Standard Oil Company in 1917 and moved away from Whitehall Village altogether during World War II; however, he continues to reside there today as an honorary citizen and contributes financially to local causes through his foundation which provides scholarships for local students

Whitehall, Ohio is a small town located in the Muskingum County of Ohio. The first settlers to the area were white men who migrated from Virginia in the late 18th century. They named their town after their home country and built a log cabin on the site that is still standing today. Whitehall was incorporated as a village in 1907, but it remained an unincorporated community until 1959. It became part of the city of Dayton when it was incorporated into that city. The first post office at Whitehall was established on March 1, 1814, and remained in operation until December 15, 1916. The first settler to live in Whitehall was John Witherspoon. He arrived with his family from Northampton County, Pennsylvania in 1815 and erected a cabin on the current site of Whitehall Village. Witherspoon served as justice of peace for Muskingum County from 1821 to 1830 and also served as selectman from 1827 to 1830. He died in 1840 at age 73 years old and is buried at West Greenlawn Cemetery near Dayton. The village of Whitehall grew rapidly due to its location close to major transportation arteries such as Route 77 and US 23A. In 1909, Mayor John Fenton proposed creating an urban center for Whitehall by consolidating all the businesses existing within its limits into one pavilion-style building designed by architect Harry Aikenbaugh Jr.. However, this idea never progressed beyond planning stages because of financial difficulties incurred by Mayor Fenton himself. In 1959, City Manager JT Maynard recommended that Whitehall become an annexe to the larger city of Dayton due to its strategic location next door on US 231A between Muskingum Avenue and Pinto Road; however, Eaton rejected this proposal because he felt that it would create too much competition for his own department within Dayton's boundaries.] In 1957-1959 both mayors had each held office for 2 terms without being reelected so there could be no continuity or favoritismitism among their appointees.]
Whitehall is a town in Columbiana County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,858 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Middletown, OH-KY Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settler in Whitehall was John Eaton. The town was platted in 1802 by Major General David Wilkinson and named for him and his family's farm near Whitehall Creek. The name may have been derived from a local term meaning "a white house." In 1824, Whitehall became the seat of Columbiana County and it remained so until its creation as an independent county in 1907. Whitehall had two churches until they were dissolved in 1892 and 1893 respectively. A new church was built on Main Street in 1903 and it remains the town's only active building today.
