Whitehall is a town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. Whitehall was founded in 1814 by James Waring and his father-in-law Nicholas Petty as a post office called "Waringstown." The name change to Whitehall on February 20, 1821 when it became part of the new Harrisonburg Township. The first store in Whitehall opened in 1825. The first school was built in 1830 and the first teacher was Mrs. Elizabeth Gault (1831–1909). In 1836, the township had a population of 123 and two churches were built: First Baptist Church (founded December 1840) and Methodist Episcopal Church (dedicated October 1850). In 1865, Whitehall Township adopted a new charter that provided for six wards with five trustees each; this changed the entire township into a municipal corporation under state law. On November 3, 1870, after many requests from residents within the municipal corporation, referendum results showed that they wanted to become one consolidated city with its own police force and fire department; however this proposal never received approval from state lawmakers who instead passed an act creating Medina County which divided Whitehall Township into four wards with three trustees each. According to the 2008 census data,[1] Whitehall has a total area of 382 square miles (984 km²), making it one of the smallest townships in Medina County by land area but having over 1,000 people living inside its borders according to2010 census figures[2]. The town's downtown contains several notable buildings dating back to before white settlement: Whatcom Hall from 1796 is one of only two structurally surviving antebellum buildings still standing on what once constituteduy section of central Harrisonburg Township; Waring's Store was erected about 1800 on what is now Washington Avenue between Clinton Street and Market Streets; also significant are early frame homes clustered around Court House Square near where Main Street intersects State Route 30E today; these include Queen Anne Style brick houses No. 10 through 16 on Government Road east side just south of Court House Square along with Early Federal Period additions such as an early dugout log cabin at No. 9 Court House Square which served as jail until 1951; all are listed on sortsheets developed by preservationists group Save Our Heritage Incorporated since 2004.[3] White Hall experienced significant growth following annexation by Medina County during Prohibition Era due to its location near various alcohol production plants operated by America's largest liquor company then known as Pee Weeces - later renamed Budweiser - which employed thousands of workers across Eastern Ohio during those years thanks largely to government incentives then available including free or low cost housing developments financed mostly through bonds issued jointly by both local municipalities and Budweiser itself. While per capita consumption levels remained relatively high throughout prohibition era compared to other parts of Eastern Ohio due largely to restrictive driving laws then prevailing statewide - especially among rural populations – crime rates soared resulting primarily from organized crime/drug trafficking activities conducted outbidownside Without regulatory oversight these operations eventually came under legal scrutiny culminating ultimately in 1984 when Prohibitions were repealed nationwide followingPresident Ronald Reagan's successful effort dubbed Operation Crossroads
Whitehall was founded in 1811, by General James Wilkinson. The village developed around the post office and a schoolhouse, which were built on the town square. In 1824, Whitehall became part of the newly formed Mentor Township. The township changed its name to Findlay Township in 1868, and then to Whitehall Township in 1903. The population of Whitehall died down until it reached its peak during World War II when it peaked at 1,500 residents.
