The town developed around a cotton gin and grinding mill that were constructed beginning in the early 19th century. In 1865, Whitehall became the site of the battle of Lovejoy's Station during the American Civil War. Union forces fought two battles here before being routed by Confederate forces under General Robert Ewing. In 1886, Whitehall incorporated as a city and experienced rapid growth until its peak in 1920 when it had a population of 10,000 people. However, this growth stopped abruptly after World War II when industry shifted from nearby Toledo to other parts of Ohio. Today, Whitehall maintains proudly small-town character with a variety of shops and restaurants clustered around its square courthouse block and long Main Street commercial district
