The City of Whitehall, Ohio was founded in 1825 by General George Washington. The city was named for the Battle of Yorktown, which happened in 1781. The battle ended the American Revolution and helped establish the United States as a country. Whitehall is also home to the National Museum of American History and has a rich history that goes back to its founding. Whitehall was founded on July 6, 1825 by General George Washington and his army after they were forced out of Yorktown, Virginia. The town was built on land that had been granted to them by Lord Fairfax. The town was originally called Harrisonburg because it belonged to Captain John Harrison who fought in the war against Spain. After General Washington’s victory at Yorktown, he ordered all of his forces to leave Virginia and move westward into what is now Ohio. Whitehall quickly became an important center for trade and commerce in Ohio because it had access to several rivers and streams that served as routes for goods arriving from Pennsylvania and New England. In addition, Whitehall had two large mills which provided employment for many people in the early days of this state. These mills were located near where today’s downtown stands today. One of the most famous residents of Whitehall during its early years was Drayton Hall who served as Governor of Ohio from 1830-1834. He helped create modern Democratic Party politics in Ohio while also helping grow Commerce City into one of America’s leading cities during this time period. Other notable residents during this time include Moses Holland (a prominent lawyer), Isaiah Cousins (a judge), James Prentice (a congressman), Elijah Parish Hinton (an entrepreneur), Chennault Forbes (presidential candidate) and other influential people from within Ohio’s growing ranks at the turn of the century!
On October 3, 1814, the first Ohio company was organized at Whitehall Township in Stark County. The company's members were named the “First Company of Major Andrew Lewis and His brethren”. They purchased 640 acres of land from John C. Bowen for $2 per acre. On November 17, 1814, they built a log cabin on their new property and named it "Whitehall." It became the home of the first Ohio State House in 1815.
