Whitehall is a town in Muskingum County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first white settlers in Whitehall were James and Rebecca Cook who moved from Bedford Township, Pennsylvania in 1795. They built a cabin on the then-forested hilltop known as "Mountain View", which still stands today. In 1806, they married Anna Maria Scherrer and founded the Scherrer family farm that still stands today. In 1811 John Scherrer married Catharine Henshaw and began to plant potatoes on their farmstead. By 1830 he had also started raising corn and wheat on his land. In 1834 he sold his land to Solomon Kapp and started building a gristmill on the current millpile location near where Main Street intersects SR 356 (present day West Front Street). The Kapp family operated the mill until 1907 when it was acquired by J P Biddle & Sons Paper Company which continued to operate it until 1978 when it was taken over by First National Bank of Dayton because of its importance in local commerce during that time period. In 1860 Whitehall had a population of 350 people; by 1920 it had grown to 2,000 residents with an annual payroll of $3 million dollars! The post office opened in 1865 and served as an important link between rural communities within Muskingum County and Whitehall during much of its early years! During World War II service members living within one mile of Whitehall were required to provide their own food if they could not get enough from home! One such resident was Mrs Ruth Stephenson who furnished all her own groceries for her entire household! During prohibition era many businesses closed due to lack of customers or government regulation however many reopened once repeal became legal including J P Biddle's Paper Company which again resumed operations after becoming independent later that year! As technology advanced beginning around 1960 several new businesses began opening up including internet cafes (e-commerce) along with restaurants, gas stations, health clinics etc.; this growth accelerated through the 1990s until 2000 when downtown Whites Hall went into declined status following multiple fire accidents company abandoned most buildings except for one store left vacant until 2012 when it reopened as Beavercreek steakhouse under new management
