The post office was established in 1830 and named for Colonel John Whitehead, who served as the U.S. marshal for Ohio from 1840 to 1846. In 1861, General Robert Ewell's army invaded Ohio and captured Cincinnati; Whitehall was one of several small towns within strategic miles of Cincinnati that were destroyed or looted during the fighting. After Union forces regained control over Ohio, they re-established white slavery there while giving free blacks the choice to leave or be enslaved until 1865; this effectively ended African American presence in Ohio after that date.

Whitehall was a small town in the county of Medina, Ohio, United States. The first white settler in Whitehall was John Armstrong, who arrived in 1800. The community name is likely derived from one of Armstrong's children: "Halta" or "Alta". In 1821, General Anthony Wayne founded the settlement of Ottawa on land that had been part of Whitehall. Ottawa became an important military and trading post during the War for Independence and later served as the capital of the Shawnee Nation. This location made it convenient for Congress to meet in session without having to move around Great Britain. In 1824, Congress passed an act annexing Medina County to Wyandot County so that Wyandot and Ottawa could both be within their own government. This Act created a situation where Whitehall would become part of Wyandot County while still being considered a part of Medina County by both its citizens and government officials. The community slowly declined over time due to many factors including economic competition from larger towns such as Dayton and Cincinnati; lack of available water resources; population growth caused by immigration; fire blight; and changing demographics within Wyandot County which made it difficult for businesses to survive outside OFA areas. However, some residents did manage to keep their homes until after World War II when they were sold off or destroyed by developers looking for more money to build new homes. Today there are only a few remaining buildings from the original community with most residents living near Dayton or Cincinnati.
