Westlake is a city in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 12,463 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Cuyahoga County. Westlake was founded in 1836 and incorporated as a city in 1868. In 2002, it became part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. The area now known as Westlake was first settled by Native Americans in the late 17th century. The first European to visit what is now Westlake was John Lederer on October 7, 1696, from Hamburg, Germany with his family and twenty-two other pioneers who journeyed down the Scioto River Valley on horseback. He named the area after himself and called it "Waldeck". There are several theories about where Lederer got his name from: one suggests that he derived it from an early sighting of a white man's house on a ridge overlooking their settlement; another theory suggests that he may have been familiar with German words meaning "high ground" or "prominence", which would fit well into the context of this location. In 1795, James Caldwells moved to what is now Westlake from Athens Township and began to sell land east of Canal Road to settlers. One such settler was Nicholas Merrill who bought 5 acres (2 ha) on July 14, 1800 for $200USD cash only Merrill built a log cabin and lived there until 1802 when he sold his land including this parcel to Peter Henshaw for £135PPP sterling On April 6th 1830 Henshaw sold 8 1/2 acre (3 ha) section 3 NW corner W State road 4 miles SSW of Dayton for $525(!!!) US dollars This purchase made Henshaw owner of over 60% of all tracts within 10 miles (16 km) east or west of Dayton . In 1840 George Akeley set up shop near today's intersection NW 50th St./W Erie Rd., across from today's defunct Parker Tire store lot . He started selling goods at street level then raised prices above costumers' heads . By 1850 Akeley had organized what we now call “The Greek Masons” Lodge No 925 D&A No 269 WEST KENTUCKY ROAD ). That same year also saw establishment by Alexander Lewis Storey & Co., liquor merchants at Clinton Street between First Ave./State Rd.(now I-71)and Euclid Ave./ Oakwood Ave .. Lewis Storey donated land adjacent to Clinton Street between First Ave./State Rd.(now I-71)and Euclid Ave./Oakwood Ave ..thus forming Little Italy.. Over time various stores were opened along Clinton Street includin g Woolworths (1910), Macy's (1920), JCPenney (1940), Sears Roebuck & Co.'s Tower department store (1961). Today most businesses along Clinton Street are closed but some still remain open including Parkers Tire locations mentioned earlier.. About 1925 Demolition began on building across from current day SE 50th St./W Erie Rd.,now home to our existing PNC bank building foundations before being demolished entirely

Polk in 1837 as part of the Indian Removal Act. The village became an incorporated municipality in 1902. In 1957, Westlake merged with its neighboring townships, including East Liverpool and Mentor, to form a new city known as "West Lake". As part of that merger, the old city council disbanded and all functions were taken over by the new city government which is still operating today under that name though it has no legal standing within the original town or township boundaries. Westlake's rich history begins with its founding as Westlake Village, which dates back to 1836 when Phineas Day and John Day founded Westlake Village on land patented to them by President James K Polk in 1837 as part of the Indian Removal Act."
Westlake was founded in 1827 by Captain John Westlake and his wife, Martha. The town began as a small farming community on the west side of OH’s Coshocton River. By 1830, the population had increased to about 100 people, and in 1832 Captain Westlake built the first school in Westlake. In 1835, he also erected the first courthouse in Ohio. In 1840, Captain Westlake married Emma Dodge and moved to Cincinnati. Their family continued to live in Cincinnati until 1865 when they relocated to Oklahoma City due to tornado damage there. After their death, their children took over management of their family's business interests includingWestlake Cheese Factory; however, it reverted back into ownership by their grandchildren until it closed in 1984.
