Westlake is a city in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 21,711 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1824 and named for John Westlake, an early settler. The city is located on the west bank of the Cuyahoga River and is east of Cleveland. Westlake became a city in 1907 when it annexed neighboring Huron Heights and unincorporated areas to its south. In 1925, it annexes part of Park View Township to the north. In 1960, it annexes most of Fairview Heights to the east and annexed most of Mayfield Village to the south. It now includes all of downtown Westlake as well as parts of Mayfair Gardens, Mount Pleasant Place, and University Circle. The history of Westlake can be traced back to 1824 when John Westlake settled on land near what is now downtown Westlake with his family. He donated 1/4 acre (0.20 km2) for development into what would become known as "West Lake". By 1830, he had developed three tracts totaling 3 acres (1 ha). One tract was sold by him to AUBURN BUSINESSmen who named their new village "Westlake" after him while another was given anonymously to HENRY HOLLEY who built a gristmill there which served as one of the first businesses in town; this mill still stands today (now used as a museum). The name stuck around until 1907 when it changed again - this time becoming "Huron Heights". In 1925, following annexation by WestLake from neighboring Park View Township due to contiguous territory acquisitions that year within that township boundaries only - Huron Heights remained unchanged save for incorporation into WestLake itself on that date pursuant to a consolidation ordinance passed by then-City Councilmember ROBERT LYONS: thus giving residents within that municipality their own City government rather than being subject justly unto those residing within either ParkView or Huron Heights themselves...This annexation made possible throughout much needed expansion in terms originally designed for just one community providing both neighborhoods with improved transportation options & access thereto through shared streetlights (& parks)...In 1960 - with much growth continuing / ensuing surrounding suburbs annexation rates accelerating ever since - most notably Mayfair Gardens coming onto the scene adjacent directly east along Euclid Avenue between University Circle & Mount Pleasant Place whereupon even more dense growth ensued resulting finally in today's entire Downtown core including much yet undeveloped surface area beyond present day limits!
