Westlake is a small town in Stark County, Ohio, United States. It is located on the banks of the Muskingum River. The population was 2,813 at the 2010 census. Westlake was founded in 1814 by General George Rogers Clark and his family as a station on the Great Western Railroad. In 1840, Westlake became an independent community when it seceded from Stark County. In 1847, it voted to merge with neighboring Canal Winchester to form Canal Winchester Township. The town remaining part of Stark County until its annexation by Cleveland in 1912. The town's history dates back to 1814 when General George Rogers Clark and his family settled here after purchasing land from the Wyandot Creek tribe for $1,000 dollars. At that time, the area was still part of Canada and there were no roads or other transportation available nearby so Clark had to find a way to get his goods and people to this new location. He built a log cabin which he named Westlake Station after himself and some of his men who helped build it. This started what would be an important legacy for the community as it would continue to serve as a trading post and also play an important role in helping pioneer settlers move into what is now Stark County. A few years later, in 1817, Clarkson's son-in-law John Cranch bought land southwest of Westlake from Daniel Boone for $4,500 dollars which doubled as money for him to explore Indian Territory (now Oklahoma). John Cranch built what is now known as Canal Winchester House on this property which served as both a home and office until 1870 when he sold it and moved away for good due to gold discoveries in California. After John Cranch's death in 1830, his widow Mary bought back parts of their original land including most of what is now Westlake Village; she renamed it Canal Winchester after her husband's former home state.) In 1840 William Higginson donated all but one acre (of about ) of parcels east of canal road northward between bridge street (west side) & old mill dam (east side) towards village limits; these acres formed today’s west side village boundaries while that tract upstream remained ungiven thereby creating present day east side village boundaries defined thusly: Bridge Street NW – Old Mill Dam SW – Village Limits
Westlake is located in the northwest corner of Ohio, just east of Cincinnati. The community was founded by Methodists in 1814 and named for Rev. John Westlake, a Methodist preacher who had been active in the area. During the mid-19th century, it served as an important stop on the Underground Railroad. After the Civil War, Westlake became a thriving agricultural community with more than 300 businesses and 2,000 residents. It declined during the 20th century but has regained some of its former prominence as a center for arts and culture.
