Westlake is a small town in the northwest corner of Ohio, United States. The population was 3,868 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The land that makes up Westlake was first settled by Native Americans in the late 18th century. In 1812, General James Wilkinson and his army destroyed a village on what is now called Wilkinson's Creek because its inhabitants had not submitted to Ulysses S. Grant's invasion of central Ohio months earlier. The stream that still flows through Westlake was named for General Wilkinson's troops—the "Wilkinson's Creek" flowing through it today became known as Green River after General Wilkinson's regiment (the Green Beret unit) which fought in the Indian Wars. In 1839, Edwin Wayland established Wayland Station on land now within Westlake limits; this early settlement became an important transportation junction between Cincinnati and Dayton because it had a road leading from the latter town to Wayland Station and back again. In 1857, construction began on what would become Cincinnati’s first public library, which opened in 1861 adjacent topresent-day Central High School (now Wright-Patterson AFB). That same year also saw the opening of WLWTV Channel 15—the first station in Cincinnati to be licensed as a television broadcaster—and eventual annexation by CBS owner RCA Radio Corporation (later Viacom) when that company purchased WLW TV from RCA in 1954. Westlake's history dates back to 1836 when it was named for Captain John Westlake, an officer in the United States Navy who fought with Commodore James K. Polk during the Mexican–American War. The post office at Westlake was first established in 1837. The town began to grow rapidly after it became part of Cleveland on May 15, 1854 when it became one of five towns that were combined to form the city of Cleveland. On October 25, 1872, Westlake incorporated as a village and later annexed its neighboring communities of Hillcrest and Deerfield Heights. In 1908, East Stroudsburg University opened a branch campus in Westlake and continues to be there today. In 1952, only 2% of all businesses in Cleveland wereowned by women; however, due to strong female entrepreneurship programs run by local organizations such as Women’s Action League (WAL), this percentage increased to over 50% by 2002 when WAL merged withCLEVELAND INC., creating one of America’s largest businesswomen’s associations which still exists today
Westlake is a city in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 26,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The first house on what is now Westlake was built in 1796 by Col. John Armstrong and his wife Susannah Shively. The town of Westlake was platted in 1810 by Jonas Langston and James Robertson. In 1812, a post office was established at Westlake and it continued to serve until 1829 when it was moved to Mount Vernon because that location had more people. The first school in Westlake was built on the corner of High Street and Park Avenue in 1814-15 by Mrs. Fenton Price. A new school building was constructed on the present site of City Hall in 1865-67 by contractors Grosse & Burnett as part of a $5,000 contract with the city of Columbus for improvements to that structure which included an addition to its roofline and additions to its walls and gables. In 1898, Mayor Abram Smedley gave land adjoining State Road 21 east of Interstate 270 for use as a public park named after him called "Smedley Park". A water tower also became part of the park which served as overflow during heavy rains from nearby reservoirs like Scioto River or Mayfield Lake; however, this project never went forward because money could not be raised for it . In 1924 construction began on what would become City Hall: a two-story Romanesque Revival style brick building designed by architect George Gilbert Scott with innovative features such as an all weather flooring system that allowed rainwater runoff to enter through skylights instead of being discharged into outside gutters, thereby reducing flooding problems during later years; the original cornerstonestone still remains inside City Hall today . A new high school (now known as Gateway Academy) opened on February 12th, 2001 across from City Hall following plans submitted by then Mayor Michael Coleman along with support from then-City Councilman Richarlison;Gateway Academy has since been renamed Western Branch High School due to mergers among other schools within Hamilton County ...
