Westlake is a town in Summit County, Ohio, United States. The population was 5,814 as of the 2010 census. The ZIP code is 49634. Westlake is part of the Akron Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlers in what is now Summit County were James Hamilton and his brother-in-law Alexander McGillivray who arrived in 1788 from Scotland. They named their new land "Westlake" after Mount Lebanon in Lebanon, where they had been living for some time before moving to Ohio. Hamilton also built the first house in what are now Westlake and East Richland Township on this land. Hamilton's son John founded the village of Hazardville about two miles west of today's Westlake on the highway that led from Cincinnati to Dayton. In 1802, when Ohio became a state, Hazardville was renamed Westlake and its residents voted to join with neighboring Akron to form the new county of Summit County. In 1827, voters approved plans by President James Kappler to move westward along the Maumee River towards Toledo and become a consolidated city-county under his jurisdiction withAkron as its capital. This idea was shelved because of lack of financial support; however, it later resurfaced as part of plans for creating an east-west route across central Ohio following survey work done by Andrew Jackson during his presidency (1837–41). However again no money could be found so Kappler abandoned these plans and returned home instead. By 1846 all vestiges of Western Reserve had been completely destroyed by Native Americans during American Wars including any settlements east or south of Beaver Creek Road which forms today’s border between Akron and Cleveland Heights Eventually though annexation into Cleveland brought people back into West Lake proper including many farmers driving their herds over one bridge over Beaver Creek until they reached present day Brush Park Boulevard just north of downtown Akron within minutes walk from each other . The community grew rapidly due to waves of immigrants coming through southern Illinois starting around 1850 who came seeking religious freedom available at that time although most settled near Brush Park Boulevard because it offered public lands not currently being leased out for farming or development such as those around Hillcrest Park located immediately east across Brush Park Boulevard from prior settlement area
