Westlake is a small town in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 8,844 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati metropolitan area. The name Westlake comes from two places - a stream and a hill. The stream was named after Captain James West who explored the area in 1800, while the hill was likely named for General George Washington's headquarters during the French and Indian War (1756- 1763). The first settler in what is now Westlake Township was Jonas Taylor in 1814. By 1825, all of Hamilton County had been organized into townships; Westlake Township became part of that group on July 1, 1827. As one of several large towns created around Cincinnati as a result of railroad construction, Westlake experienced its greatest growth during World War I when manufacturing industries increased demand for materials and products from servicemen and their families living near by. However, following World War II until the early 1960s when suburban development began to take hold throughout central Hamilton County%, most residents here remained engaged with agriculture or local businesses which continues to be an important economic force today. According to the 2010 census, there are 8,844 people living in Westlake Township: 6385 male residents (78%) and 5486 female residents (22%). Westlake, Ohio is a small town in the northwestern part of the United States. It is located about 33 miles (53 kilometers) northeast of Cleveland, on the border of Lake Erie and Medina County. The population was 5,854 at the 2010 census. The village was founded in 1825 by members of the Methodist Church as part of a larger settlement named Westfield. In 1837, it became an incorporated municipality with a population of 3,000. The village had two schools until 1954 when they were merged into one school system. In 1925, Westlake's first post office opened and served for four years before being closed due to lack of mail service. The first postmaster was Jno Peebles who also served as township treasurer from 1900-1910 and 1916-1920; Wm Crouch from 1920-1924; Geo Sayers from 1924-1928; Agrn Metzger from 1928-1932; Hap Hobbs from 1932-1936; John Fenton from 1936-1938; and Virgil Gowan from 1938-1945. On July 1, 1945, after World War II ended and with no German Americans living in Ohio, the U.S. Postal Service discontinuedmail delivery to Westlake effective July 1st 1945 because "the services now rendered by American Express are more convenient." In 1951–1964 there were three postmasters: Hap Hobbs (1945 through 1951), Floyd Dyer (1951 through 1960), and Virgil Gowan (1964). During these years there were only two types of mail received: First Class Mail and Priority Mail which postage rates increased gradually over time making them less expensive than other methods that did not increase gradually such as express stamps or gift certificates which could be bought at local convenience stores without increasing postage prices unlike airmail which required payment for each shipment regardless of weight or size When postal service reopened on October 1st 1966 after 50 years it became an express package service known as UPS ground shipping

The town began as a part of the Township of Amherst on the east side of Westlake Creek. It was named for John W. Westlake, an early settler and one of the first men to come to what is now Ohio.
