On November 16, 1920, when Cincinnati merged with Dayton to form the new Dayton–Cincinnati metropolitan area, Westlake became one of its five municipalities within that area. Eastman Kodak Company built their first plant in what is now Westlake in 1912 and remains a prominent institution there today. The company moved their operations out oftown after World War II but continued to make products there until they closed in 1984. Other notable businesses located in or around Westlake include ATI Technologies Inc., which operated two factories here during their heyday; Cingular Wireless LLC., which purchased WLW-TV from Fox News Corporation for $775 million; and John Hancock Financial Services Inc., which operates a branch office here as well as 11 other locations across America.
Westlake was first settled in 1792 by the Erie Canal Company. The town got its name from a merger of two other towns, Westville and Lakewood, in 1801. In 1802, Westlake became the county seat of Cuyahoga County. In 1814, it was reincorporated as a city. In 1921, it merged with the neighboring town of Midland to form the current city of Cleveland.
