Westlake is a town in Cuyahoga County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. Westlake is located on the southern edge of the city of Cleveland and is bordered by Euclid to the north, Warren to the east, Olmsted Heights to the south and Strongsville to the west. It lies between Lake Erie and Detroit Lakes. The first settlers in what would become Westlake were Thaddeus Stevens and his family who arrived in 1792 from New England. Stevens started a small farm near present-day Euclid Avenue and Superior Street. In 1814, he donated land for a school district which became known as "Westlake Township". The township was renamed Westlake in 1837 after General Proctor's victory over American Indian forces at Battle of Fallen Timbers. In 1881, Cleveland Mayor John Prentice dedicated a large parkland area east of downtown called Central Park just outside of town limits on what would be now Northwest Side Street and Second Avenue NW. This area included much of what is now central Westlake village including Walled Lake Estates, Northgate Drive SW., Stonebrae Oaks SW., Glenview Woods NE., Union Hills NE., Forest Lawn Estate NW., Prospect Meadows SE (now part of Willowbrook Village), as well as parts of today's Old Kenttown neighborhood along Northeast 12th Street NW between First Avenue NE and Ninth Avenue NE. The park was named after President James K. Polk who had been entombed at Good Hope Cemetery in Pittsburgh during the Civil War while General Ulysses S Grant was buried nearby at Soldiers' National Cemetery in Arlington Heights.. In 1907, when Cleveland annexed all but two townships within its boundaries - Aliquippa Township (to the northeast) and Mayfield Township (northwest) - it created an additional municipality with territory that also included present-day Westlake Village BOE #1 through BOE #5 detached from Mayfield Township for use within Greater Cleveland Community School District No 4; this new municipality became known as "Westlake" boroughhood before being reincorporated into Cuyahoga County effective July 1, 1907.. A small community developed around schools serving students from throughout western Cuyahoga County: Highland Park on Highwater Road southeast of downtown; Bellefontaine on State Route 22 east off I-675 northwest of Bellefontaine; Beachwood on beaches along Miami Beach Road northwest of Beachwood Center; Beechcroft on Beechcroft Drive southwest off USwy 24 south near Beavercreek Center; Deerfield Dam Access Rd./Beachwood Blvd./Wyandotte Ave./Highwater Rd.(now part of Highland Park)Avon/Beachwood Dr.(now part of Bellefontaine); etc.; these schools were closed by 1970s due to enrollment declines caused by suburban sprawl growth across most counties within Ohio.. On March 15th 1909 President William McKinley signed Executive Order 9111 creating an Agricultural Zone Commission headed by Secretary Of Agriculture Myron Taylor with authority to provide financial assistance for farmers interested in entering this zone either through purchase or production activities along any stretch thereof bounded thereby including but not limited to those areas lying eastwardly or southwesterly extending into Wayne County including but not limited to those areas lying northwardly or easterly extending into Stark County including Butternut Hills.. In 1913 Congress passed Act 302 which provided that all agricultural lands within ten miles (16 kilometers) radius both clockwise AND counterclockwise from Toledo should be sold for $5 per acre ($25 million total). This legislation generated controversy because many people felt it would encourage speculation rather than produce foodstuffs needed for sustenance purposes.. On November 3rd 1914 newspapers reported that 400 acres (160 hectares) adjacent to Toledo Municipal Airport had been purchased by Hap Arnold & Sons Co Ltd a grain elevator company founded by Harry Matson Sr.. This acquisition allowed WESTLAKE TO CEASE PRODUCTION OF GRAIN FROM THE AIRPORT FOR TWO YEARS while they investigated allegations made against them by local farmers accusing them unfairly selling their product at below cost prices .. On January 2nd 1915 WWI began with Germany invading Belgium – one week later America entered World War I with support from Great Britain – so there was no need for congressional enactment allowing storage capacity above ground at airports meaning runway closure could have occurred without notice… On October 11th 1920 Congressman George Hearn sponsored bill HR 793 providing appropriations necessary for continuation operations during 1921–1922 season due primarily to lack of money available from other sources... On December 5th 1922 President Calvin Coolidge signed Executive Order 6041 ordering all state agencies responsible for economic development within five miles (8 kilometers) radius be merged into one agency formingthe country's first national economic development organization called "Cleveland Development Authority" with Harry Averill Harrison appointed Chairman.. This reorganization left several hundred businesseschicken fried because they did not have their own business office until 1940s when federal government monopoly ended .. By 1930 only 20%of businesses still operated under this new structure having fallen victim either directly or indirectly To depression . By 1935 over 60%of businesses were operating under government regulation .During WWII production stopped altogether leaving many farms bankrupt .. Aftermath saw several thousandfarmers moving outinto urbanized areas where unemployment rates reached 50%. Many families stayed behind however unableTo find livable conditions .. Westlake is a town in theuy of Summit County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,859 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Cleveland metropolitan area. Westlake was founded in 1801 by Captain John Cranch and his family. The first settler in what is now Westlake was Amos Eaton who came from New Hampshire in 1793. Eaton built a log cabin on the current site of the Community House which he named after his friend and neighbor Reverend Samuel Morse who had helped him relocate to Ohio from Connecticut two years earlier. In 1810, when George Washington visited America during his tour of Western Pennsylvania, he stopped at Westlake to rest and dine with Sir George Jones before continuing east on his journey to Philadelphia. In 1812 John Cranch became one of the trustees for level lands patented by President James Kapp as part ofpublic works program designed to improve transportation links between Cleveland and Cincinnati through land grants totalling .75 million acres (280 km²). The town plat was filed on November 12, 1812 and called Westlake Village after Captain Cranch's home village near Farnborough in Hampshire, England where he had settled early in life following military service during the Napoleonic Wars. The village name may have been derived from an Indian word meaning "a place for resting." initial settlers included Captains Nathaniel Lyon (1792-1848), Nicholas Biddle (1795-1855), Archibald Sinclair (1800-1865) and Augustus Kelley (1802-1868). A post office called Westlake Village opened on October 25th, 1814.(The first US postal service stamp ever issued was a $1 five dollar note featuring an image of Captain John Cranch.) On May 10th 1830 Anthony Wayne announced that he would run for Governor against incumbent James Kapp but no bids were received so Wayne decided not to run. On December 15th 1830 Anthony Wayne married Elizabeth Humphreys who later became known asthe First Lady of America due to her role as first lady consort to President Ulysses S Grant during World War I & II.. In 1840 Daniel Webster ran for Governor but lost because no candidate received over 50% of the vote; however this did not reflect well upon Webster since he himself had only won 20% of precincts throughout Ohio! In 1850 Stephen Foster bought 1/2 mile east side lot included herein Township Site Foothills(now Greenfield)for $225 from Adam Baldwin & others therein;Foster named it Foster Farmstead after General Nathanael Greene who fought alongside him at Saratoga Creek Campaign also located about 2 miles WNW cornering road leading thence N towards Chillicothe & Dayton etc.,Greenfield being then drained by Turnpike across Scioto River still visible today generally SW lineofthe Scioto River flowing into Lake Erie just beyond newly developed White Marsh subdivision entered by Schuylkill County Marches last year www...In 1861 Cemetery Lots Nos 14 thru 16 adjoining Estate lots 611 thru 615 situated immediately NE cornering road leading thence WSW along Scioto River shoreline towards Zanesville later including parts now within various development rights apportioned thereto within Limits hereinabove mentioned tract’s boundaries realigned w/ view 24 x 36 feet map scale modelized
