Westlake is a town in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 3,871 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cleveland–Marshall area. The first settlers in what is now Westlake were the family of John and Anna Lapp who arrived in 1795. They founded a small cabin on the banks of the Muskingum River. In 1801, James White settled here and began raising corn and other crops. In 1806, he moved his farm to what is now downtown Westlake from rural surroundings near Mansfield Township (now Defiance). By 1810, white farmers had established seven villages in Lucas County: Ashland (founded by Peter Henschel), Bedford (founded by Nicholas Teller), Bellevue (founded by Jacob Saylor and others), Bexley (founded by David Browning), Defiance (established by George Stephenson as East Liverpool), Franklin (established by Benjamin Rush) and Westlake (established by James White). The village system gradually declined as people left for better opportunities elsewhere in Ohio or Virginia during the 1830s and 1840s. However, some residents kept their villages until they were disbanded around 1870 when county government was reorganized into multiple wards. In 1850, two men named Lewis built a log cabin on an hill overlooking downtown Westlake from which they could see all of Lucas County including Ashland and Bexley which they had not seen before. Lewis continued to live there until his death in 1865 when his son took over his father's land holdings hereabouts This unusual early settler community proved to be an enduring memory that has been visited annually since then – more than 50 years later! On July 4th, 1903 – 92 years after its founding – downtownWestLake became America’s first “town square” when it was dedicated with Mayor Abram Davenport officiating at a dinner hosted by President William McKinley attended also by Senators Burton Kammerer of Ohio and Samuel Jepson of Indiana; both men being natives of nearby Mansfield Township where they had earlier served as Justice Court judges.. Also present were Mrs. John Averill Smith who founded Hillsboro Village adjacent to Hillcrest Cemetery; Commodore Willis Sather whose Mansion still stands on Main Street today; Drury Harper treasurer general of state army during Harrison’s presidency; Mrs Maud Playfair treasurer general coastal surveyor during World War I; Rev Gossett Copley president day care center begun August 12th 1913; WWI veteran Rufus Fenton postmaster.; local banker Hap Arnold vice president bank holding company.; prominent citizens attorney Wm Ewing & Sons LLP., member Boardwalk Park District commissioners.; civic association Ladies Auxiliary American Legion Post No 1., First National Bank building located today across from Wright State University building containing classrooms/offices/theater/sports fields etc... The dedication ceremony also included speeches from Mayor Davenport readmitting DowntownWestLake back into commerce following prohibition through dry days Laws enacted at this time included Prohibition Act No 30 Geo 715 et seq... On December 5th 1916 vandals damage post office annexe west side causing loss $2200 After repairs were made publically funded via bond issue Alderman Timothy Steele unveiled new stainless steel windows within 2 weeks

On October 1, 1907, all but 3 blocks east of State Street were added to the city limits as part of a annexation referendum held by Westlake Township commissioners. On November 15, 1907, East Cleveland (then called Cleveland) became a city with its own government and economy independent from that of Westlake Township
