Westlake is a town in the U.S. state of Ohio, located on the Scioto River. The population was 20,393 at the 2010 census. Westlake is home to the University of Toledo and two minor league baseball teams, the Toledo Mud Hens and the Dayton Dragons. The first settlers in what is now known as Westlake were white farmers who arrived in 1802 from Virginia. The name "Westlake" was given to them by General George Washington for their location near his home at Mount Vernon. In 1810, Captain John Green settled a farm on what is now South Main Street in what is now Westlake Township. Captain Green's wife, Martha Ann (Booth) Bradford served as one of the first female justices of Cass County, Ohio. In 1814-1815, James Wigglesworth built a log cabin on present day North Main Street in what is now South Park Township and named it after him - Wigglesworth House still stands today overlooking South Park Avenue in Westlake Township). In 1821-1822, Colonel Edwin White set up a ferry service between Lucasville and Marysville using logs pushed downriver from Youngstown by his forces during the war with Mexico that started that year.
