The town experienced significant growth during the 19th century, with a population of over 100,000 people by 1860. In 1892, Westerville became a city and it has remained that way since then. Westerville, Ohio is a town in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 21,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Daytona Beach–Muncie Metropolitan Statistical Area. Westerville is located on the Scioto River and is bordered by Elizabethtown to the north, West Liberty to the east, and Medina to the south. The first European settlers in what would become Westerville were George Washington and his son James K. Polk who arrived in 1795 and founded a trading post called Friendship Station on the Scioto River. In 1802, David Witherspoon bought land from James K Polk for $1,000 which he donated to create a town site that he named Westerville after his father-in-law Colonel John Witherspoon (1746-1825). Colonel Witherspoon had served as an aide-de-camp to President George Washington during the War of 1812. In 1815, John Quincy Adams moved into Westerville with his family following its incorporation as a village by General Order No. 1 of July 9th of that year. In 1830, Thorpe & Company began construction of one of America's first cotton ginners at what would eventually become known as Eldon Mills; this mill continued operations until 1862 when it was replaced by Union Mill No. 2 on Green Street near Walnut Street in downtown Westerville (now west side thereof). This mill produced more than two million pounds of yarn per day until it closed down due to World War II shortages of cotton yarns which led directly to Bethlehem Steel Corporation’s establishment in 1945 as America’s largest steel producer! During Prohibition years (1929-1933), many residents engaged in liquor sales from their homes! The business district now includes much modern architecture dating back to Post - era structures such as Firestone Tire & Rubber Co., First National Bank building and other large commercial buildings! Westerville is a city in Delaware County, Ohio, United States. The population was 30,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Westerville was founded in 1811 as a station on the Underground Railroad. The current downtown area was platted in 1868 and became a town in 1893. In 1899, Westerville became an independent city and retains its original name today. The first permanent settler in what is now Westerville was Elijah Howe who built a cabin on the edge of what is now known as Park Avenue in 1811. He named his settlement after himself, Westerville ( pronounced "wɛster-vil"). A post office called Westerville had been established by 1815 and operated until it was discontinued in 1836 due to lack of business opportunities within the new community. In 1868, John Sibley erected land on which he built an elegant three-story frame house, then known as "The Old House". This building still stands today and houses the Westervillians Museum of Art and Archives which opened its doors to the public on July 1, 2006. The architecture of this home reflects Sibley's interest in traditional Dutch Colonial style with elements of Federal architecture andtownship planning that were popular at the time. In 1893, when Cleveland annexed much of Delaware County including Westerville into its limits, many residents decided to move their homes closer to downtown for economic reasons rather than continue to live miles away from employment opportunities or shopping areas like Hyde Park or Forest Hills.(Doyle) Westerville experienced some significant growth during World War II with merchant marine service being one major industry providing jobs for locals throughout both war years(Kirkpatrick). Afterthe war ended however there wasn't nearly enough job opportunity for all citizens so many people returned to their prewar lifestyles; resulting in decreased population growth(Fowler). However since 2000 there has been steady population growth (+2%) thanks to annexing neighboring townships along with several new businesses opening up.(Galloway) After more than two centuries living under one name only slightly different from when it first came into existence - 'WesterVILLE', our proud city finally got its own name back after years of discussion & campaign - Novi Township!
