Westerville is a town in Summit County, Ohio, United States. The population was 11,814 at the 2010 census. Westerville is the largest community in Summit County and one of the larger towns in Ohio. It is located on the southern edge of the University of Akron metropolitan area. The first settlers in Westerville were Daniel Boone and his family who arrived from Kentucky in 1797. In 1811, three brothers, John and Nicholas Hagerty, founded the town of Hagerstown on land grant from President James K. Polk for their father's service as a scout for Ulysses S. Grant during the American Civil War. The Hagers had married sisters from nearby Coshocton Township and named their new town after their families' homesickness for home county Coshocton (now Delaware). In 1881, when Cleveland-based manufacturer Elisha Gray bought land east of Westerville to build an agricultural college near present-day Cleveland Heights, he named it "Westerville" after himself and his wife Hanna (née Putnam) Gray Arnett donated $10 to that end. When Cleveland State Normal School opened in 1886 as part of what was then called Western Reserve University, students from Westerville flocked there to attend classes despite protests by local farmers who felt that education would lead to joblessness among their youths; indeed this proved to be true (though not actually until after World War II). In 1915–16 Winton Mudd College opened as a branch campus of Cleveland State Teachers College; its main building still stands today as part of Erie Community High School west of downtown Westerville.. During World War II, Westerville played a major role in creating munitions production at two local plants located within walking distance of each other. The plant that produced munition shells was turned into an air-defense radar station during World War II; while the Plant producing fighter planes was used to produce bombers and missiles during that conflict. Today both plants are restoration projects run by local organizations which continue to produce munitions here today
Westerville was founded in 1795 by George Washington and the first post office was established in 1801. The city annexation occurred in 1907. In 1911, Westerville became a city and the name was changed to Dayton.
