Westerville is a city in Summit County, Ohio, United States. The population was 7,564 at the 2010 census. Westerville is the most populous city in Summit County and is also the second most populous city in Ohio after Cleveland. It was founded by families of Scandinavian immigrants who arrived during the mid-19th century. They began construction of a small town on the banks of the Maumee River, which they named Westerville after their home parish in Norway. The first permanent settler was Norwegian immigrant Ole Sivertsen, who built a cabin on what is now Elm Street in 1853. In 1879, Swedish immigrant Gustaf Sundquist purchased land adjacent to Sivertsen's cabin and started building his own house and business on Elm Street. He named his new settlement "Westerville" for his birthplace in Sweden. In 1903, an act of Congress designated Westerville as America's capital city for its role as a center for education and culture under President Theodore Roosevelt. The designation caused some controversy because Cleveland had been chosen as America's capital since 1792 (although it had been provisional until that point). However, many residents chose to move to Westerville due to its central location within easy driving distance of downtown Cleveland and its variety of cultural attractions such as theaters, museums, art galleries and restaurants. In 1907–08, local businessmen erected a stockade around what is now the Mainstreet mall to prevent gambling there; this became known locally as "The Wall". Westerville experienced significant growth following World War II when thousands of soldiers settled there from across Ohio and Michigan Territory service areas seeking work in defense industries. Many businesses emerged from wartime production: Uptown Men’s clothing store started manufacturing undies out of fabric leftover from war production; Wernher von Braun’s Rocketdyne company manufactured missiles out of plutonium produced at Pilot Plant No. 4; Standard Oil built an oil refinery here; Procter & Gamble opened their first plant here to produce Tide laundry detergent products; GE constructed two gas plants here – one producing natural gas for electric power generation and another producing coal-fired heaters – both operated until 1978; Ford Motor Company opened their first assembly line for automobiles here including one that produced Pinto coupes before moving it to Mexico City later that year; dozens more companies developed during this time including IBM (which established research facilities here), Motorola (headquartered in Toledo), Weyerhaeuser (founded by German immigrants), JBL Audio/Video Corporation (founded by banker George Brown) and many others not listed here due to space limitations or lack of interest from researchers or historians! The town of Westerville was founded in 1811 by a group of settlers from Pennsylvania. The first post office was established in Westerville in 1814, and the town became a county seat in 1837. In 1907, the village of Westerville merged with the township to form a new municipality. The township renamed itself Westerville-Belmont Township on July 1, 1912. On October 1, 1928, the Webster County Board of Elections changed the name of the municipality to Westerville-Merrill Township. On December 3, 1972, Merrill Township and parts of Westerville annexed part of Medina Township.
