In 1925, Westerville had its first electric light system and also adopted water fluoridation which continues today Westerville experienced heavy development during World War II due to its strategic location as a transportation hub between Cleveland and Detroit via I-80/I-75/US-131 (the so-called "Big Three"). By 1945, there were over 100 businesses operating within one mile of downtown Westerville - more than any other municipality in central Ohio! John Westervelt died in 1825 at the age of 77 years old; his wife Hannah followed him shortly afterwards into eternity. Many members of John Westervelt's original family still reside today – such as daughter Anna Maria Knoppersmith Branstetter-Westervelt; grandson James A.; great granddaughter Rachel Fentonborn / Fenster / Fenstersmith / Featherston; sister Esther Van Meter; niece Lydia M.; nephew Jeremiah Swartzwelder-Bryan A.– all living within walking distance or less!
Westerville, Ohio was founded in 1796 by John Westervelt. The town grew rapidly and by 1800 had a population of over 200 people. In 1812, the United States acquired land east of the river for military purposes, which caused Westerville to grow even faster. By 1814, the population had reached 675 people and it continued to grow until it reached 1,000 people in 1827. After a brief decline during the 1830s due to the American Civil War, the population increased again during Reconstruction and continue growing until 1951 when they peaked at 2,711 residents.
