Westerville is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Lucas County. The population was 54,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Cincinnati–Middletown–Wilmington, OH Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Westerville was Nicholas Ioffe, who platted what is today Westerville on April 12, 1814. At that time, it was two miles wide and two miles long with a population of only 20 people. In 1818, George Stephenson built his railroad from Cincinnati to Columbus and changed Westerville's name to Columbus Township in honor of George Stephenson himself. In 1836, John Prentice founded the village of Terre Haute in Crawford County near present-day Dayton because he believed that new technology could make Illinois more productive than Ohio's agricultural landscape and forests could keep up with advances in manufacturing and transportation. Westerville became one of Prentice's townships on July 1, 1850. On November 15, 1860,[1] when violence broke out between Republicans intending to celebrate American independence during National Republican Convention in Cleveland (the "Cleveland Genesee Rebellion"), a group led by Captain Jameson moved into Westerville from an encampment near Mount Lebanon on October 17th[2][3] after learning about disorder there among angry Native Americans who had been attacking settlers for weeks before that date: General Andrew Jackson had just arrived in Cleveland from his aborted campaign against Confederate forces at Fort Donelson four days earlier![4][5] As news spread through town about what was happening—which included shots being fired from buildings across the river—Captain Jameson decided it would be safe for his men to stay put until things cooled off; and many did so over the next few days as word filtered down about potential trouble brewing elsewhere.[6][7][8] On November 16th some 9 or 10 men armed with pistols raided homes throughout town looking for weapons; no one was hurt but several were made aware of possible consequences should they get caught doing anything like this again – including job losses or imprisonment!
