Westerville, Ohio is a town in Medina County, Ohio, United States. The population was 9,491 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. The town was founded by Nicholas Covington in 1810 as a trading post on the Scioto River. In 1814, Westerville became a courthouse and later became the county seat of Medina County. In 1824, Westerville became part of the newly formed Athens-Clarke County and remained so until its annexation by Columbus in 1898. Thetown's history spans over 175 years and it has experienced various boom times and busts as it has unsuccessfully tried to become a major university or city." Westerville began as a small trading post on the Scioto River near present day Westerville proper. On July 10, 1810Nicholas Covington founded what would become Westerville with four other men when they set out from Portsmouth, New Hampshire with supplies for their new outpost. After spending two weeks travelling downriver they arrived at what would later be called "The Landing" on July 14th where they erected their first log cabin which served as their home until they could build another more permanent structure nearby some time around1816 or 1817; this second structure still stands today next to Interstate 71// according to local legend it may have once been used as a mental hospital during prohibition days!
