By 1850 there were over 100 businesses located in Westerville including grist mills ( 31), flour mills ( 36), sawmills ( 9), printing presses ( 3), carriage houses ( 1) and two churches – First Presbyterian and Congregational – as well as residences for businessmen, politicians and their families. The railroad reached Westerville by way of Browns Summit Road on Jan 20th 1870 from Dayton Junction; later called Main Street after Railway Avenue leading to Dayton across University Lake which crossed Interstate 75 just north of downtown Westervil

Westerville was first settled in 1788 by James Westervelt. The town was named after George Washington, who had visited the area in 1785. Westerville became a village in 1812 and a city in 1837.
