Westerville is a town in Delaware County, Ohio, United States. The population was 6,829 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton Metropolitan Statistical Area. Westerville was founded in 1824 by John Westervelt and his brother-in-law Nicholas Coles and named for Colonel George Westervelt, an American Revolutionary War hero. In 1851, the community became a town charter with a population of 705. The first post office opened in Westerville on July 10, 1851. The city of Dayton annexed the town of Westerville in 1903 and then again in 1907. The annexation created a new municipality with a population of 11,594 residents as well as an additional 1,422 residents who lived within the boundaries of the city but did not necessarily support it politically or economically. A fire destroyed most of the business district in 1916 and led to heavy losses for both cities; however, Dayton redeveloped much faster than Westerville did and by 1922 had regained full control over its municipal government including elections and zoning regulations which had been lost to WesterVILLE since 1903. After years of debate over whether to annex back into Westerville or keep it separate as a separate municipality due primarily to high property values within what had become known as "the inner suburb", Dayton finally annexed back into its larger city on February 12th 1984 after voting by referendum.) In 2000, voters passed an ordinance establishing DayTON's first ever school district (now calledDayton Local School District #2). This event helped bring education opportunities within walking distance for all citizens without having to leave their homes – something that was sorely lacking before then! As DayTON continued growth over ensuing years outside our borders we began looking for ways to expand beyond just providing quality schools for our students – we began exploring options for interlocking districts/schools that would provide coordinated services across multiple neighborhoods/cities type settings with shared goals/philosophy such as being “one community made better” Our vision has always been simple: help every child have access to opportunity so they can reach their full potential no matter where they live or how they grew up!
