Westerville, Ohio is a city in Hamilton County, Ohio, United States. The population was 21,775 at the 2010 census. The city is part of the Columbus metropolitan area. Westerville was founded in 1814 by George Washington Westervelt and his brother Nicholas Westervelt. It became a town in 1825 and a city in 1889. In 1916 the city annexed the Village of Noblesville. The first Europeans to arrive in what is now Westerville were French traders who came ashore on the Scioto Riverbank during the French Fort Caroline expedition of 1755–57. They named their new village "Westerville" after George Washington Westervelt's father-in-law, Colonel James Robertson (1709–1775), although no evidence exists that any such settlement ever existed. In 1814, George Washington Westervelt and his brother Nicholas Westervelt bought 640 acres (2 km²) of land from Nathan Bedford Forrest for $5 per acre ($100 total). This land was near where present day Lucas Oil Stadium stands today and would come to be known as Garden Township because it lay within what is now westbound I-71 traffic circle on Delaware Avenue just east of downtown Westerville proper. That same year, they also acquired an additional 540 acres (2 km²) east of Garden Township which they would call "New Netherland." New Netherland would become home to many future settlers including General David Dixon Porter (1802–1865), who served as general superintendent of public instruction for Ohio under Governor John Richardson; insurance heir and later Republican politician Charles Henneman; Darius Neely Cooke (1824–1910); banker Augustus Pratt; lawyer John Gough; educator Amos Stroud; physicianate namesake Drago Partridge Graybeal... The first act of the newly formed governmentality called City Council was convened on November 15, 1814 with 10 members: four men chosen by lot – one from each family – attended by Mayor Nicholas Wessels (George Washington's younger brother). On December 2nd, following presentation by Michael Cohan, recorder forHamilton County [at this time all county offices were held at courthouse], resolutions were passed authorizing building a meeting house “on or about such date as may hereafter be appointed”... It can be said that since its founding until 1865 when Cincinnati overtook it as the largest municipal center in America - Westerville has been second only to Cincinnati in terms civic activity! Of course things changed over time with Cincinnati gaining more steam but even then there wasn't room here! On February 20th 1830 commissioners Eastman & Latham erected an addition to their residence complex at 419 S Main Street – once home to Genesee Bank head Moses Browning - this addition soon became known as “the Queen Anne’s Building” due to its Queen Anne Style architecture and features including elaborate double doors leading into two stories with large sidelights and high windowsills typical of buildings erected at this time around Cleveland… In 1861 City Council authorized erection of a schoolhouse on Race Street between High Street and Maple Leaf Road/ subsequently known simply as School House No 1 [now occupied by First Baptist Church]…On October 12th 1865 City Council authorized erection of a hospital/laboratory on Elmira Road opposite Alexander Knox’s spinning wheel factory/later renamed Colored Hospital [now demolished]). After several years Of construction work both hospitals opened their doors September 3rd 1870….City Hall/Hospital actually stood until 1886 when fire destroyed most everything within days causing significant loss not only financially but also morale among our employees both male & female…..During those years numerous events took place inside & outside City Hall which are still remembered today likeMayor Strong speaking before Businessmen prior To A festive dinner At His Mansion On Beechwood Avenue….Many other memorable moments have occurred throughout our long history but these will suffice for now…..We thank God every day we have been given this wonderful opportunity to live amongst He people!!!
Westerville was founded in 1795 by John Westervelt. The town was named after Edmund Westervelt, the son of John Westervelt and his wife Mary. In 1800, the village of Westerville was established at the junction of two branches of the Scioto River. The first post office in Westerville was opened in 1804.
