Westerville is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio, on the southern bank of the Muskingum River. The population was 953 at the 2010 census, down from 1,023 at the 2000 census. Westerville is named for George Washington Westervelt, a frontier trader and political figure who served as governor of Ohio from 1802 to 1804 and as president pro tempore of the United States Senate from 1809 to 1811. The settlement began as a small Methodist missionstation founded by Rev. John Richardson in 1796 on what is now North Market Street. The first settler was James Caldwell, one of seven children born to British immigrants Samuel Caldwell and his wife Judith Greenough Caldwell. Reverend Richardson erected a log cabin in 1798 near present-day Middleton Avenue and High Street; he named it "Westerville" after George Washington Westervelt, then an American Revolutionary War general and statesman who had served as an officer under his father and brother Robert Livingston (the future 1st U.S. President). In 1800, when Ohio became a territory within the United States, Westerville became its capital; it remained so until Ross County was created in 1870s when Cleveland took over that role from Westerville proper. In 1812–1813, General Wayne fought against Native Americans known collectively as the Wyandots in what is now West Virginia; during this period much of west central Ohio was still part Indian Territory A subsequent survey by Captain Stephen Elliott located Wetherbee Creek between today's Elyria Heights neighborhood on the eastern edge of town and Brushy Creek along Interstate 80 just outside downtown resulted in Clyde Township being established adjacent to Westerville with men outfitting for military service establishedambers near Brushy Creek every day until May 6th 1861 when all male residents were required to emigrate or leave their homes due to war tensions across Kentucky & Tennessee only those able to provide detailed muster reports did not have their doors locked up while they awaited shipment Eastward moved many factories including Parma Glass Works (owned by J&L Glass) which produced replacement glassware for European customers post WWI while other plants closed shifted production away from glassmaking entirely Eliot Stroud founded furniture company

During World War II, Westerville played an important role in the Battle of Midway when more than 1,200 residents volunteers served in Navy submarines under Commander James Sperry III. After the war ended, many local companies began to fade away as technological advancements made manufacturing more efficient. However, some remnant businesses such as AutoZone remain active today thanks to their location within easy reach of Interstate 71 and Interstate 495
Westerville was founded by Simon Westervelt in 1795. The town became a part of the United States in 1815. In 1825, Westerville became the capital of Ohio.
