In 1865 Westerville joined Grant's army as part of his Overland Expedition against Richmond; he later wrote that "the only thing I cared about were my men". On July 4th of that year he ordered all cannons used in defense purpose silenced because they would not fire at a Southern battle site if they did not have orders from General Sherman; this order also resulted in arson fires throughout much of Louisville & Nashville area due to lack of munitions available to resist Confederate attacks). Westerville is a town in Lucas County, Ohio, United States. The population was 10,752 at the 2010 census. The area now known as Westerville was part of the Northwest Territory of Ohio and the Miami Purchase. It was founded by James Krieger and others in 1796. In 1814, it became a town under the name "Westerville." In 1825, it became an villages under the name "Westerville". Its final form as a town was granted on November 14, 1829. The present-day municipality dates back to February 14, 1907 when Westerville-Warren Township (later Warren County) was organized from parts of Westerville and Manchester Township. The first settler in Westerville was James Krieger who arrived in 1796. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street near the current post office building. By 1800, Krieger had bought some land east of his original cabin and started to build more homes. He named his settlement "Westervil" after his home country which he had just journeyed overland from England via Pennsylvania and New York City. By 1830 there were about 25 people living in Westervil; most were farmers or mechanics working for local businesses or decamping for periods each year during their annual migration to new lands west of the Allegheny Mountains where they engaged in mineral exploration and farming operations along with hunting and fishing trips through what is now West Virginia/Ohio border territory). According to Ohio history, Westerville was founded in 1796 by Nicholas Young and his brother. The first settler in Westerville was John Wesley who arrived in 1797. In 1800, agrarianist David Rea purchased the land now comprising Westerville from Nicholas Young. In 1801, Rea erected the first sawmill in Westerville. By 1814, there were six businesses operating in Westerville: a store, blacksmith shop, bakery, wagon wheel manufactory, and doctor’s office. In 1816-1817, the town had a population of ninety-seven people and by 1830 it had swollen to over one hundred residents. In 1840-1841, Jesse Arthur built the first brick building on what is now Market Street in Westerville. In 1845-46 Henry Ewing established an ice cream business at 5th and Clinton Streets in WesterVILLE In 1861-1862 Jno. Coddington organized the town school board On October 1st of 1862 when Union General Ulysses S Grant attacked Columbus (in present day Ohio) during the American Civil War as part of his Campaign against Confederate General Robert Ewell Jr., approximately 2200 men from ColumBUSVILLE volunteered for duty under General Grant's command and joined forces with local farmers to fight against Confederate forces which numbered only around 400 men
