The plant operated until 1978 when it closed due to low electricity prices and competition from other generators statewide; however, parts of it still remain operational as open-air reservoirs used for recreation and storage by both locals and tourists today. Westerville has been an agricultural center since its founding with smallholder farmers growing corn, beans, sweet potatoes and other vegetables; later these crops were moved to larger farms while agricultural production shifted towards meat production beginning in the early 20th century.
