The first telephone system began operations in Westerville on November 15, 1888 (the date is printed as “November 15th”). A bank was organized in 1893 and went through many name changes before it became First National Bank of Westerville in 1907. In 1916, a new high school was built within the current city limits; it remains operational today as Northern High School.

After her husband's death she continued running Lane's farmstead until her own death8 . In 1870 Anna Mears opened a dry goods store at First and High Streets9 . That same year John Dickey founded Dickey’s ice cream parlor10 This Parlor still stands today11 . By 1880 there were 10 residences here12 ; by 1890 there were 2513 Mrs Mears left behind 5 children14 ; 4 boys15 ; 2 girls16 ; one girl died young17 and one boy died young18 : Anna Mears' only son (John W.) became local attorney general19 ; John Auerbach replaced John Dickey when he retired20and remain so to this day21
