Westerville, Ohio is a city in the U.S. state of Ohio and the county seat of Mahoning County. The population was 32,829 at the 2010 census, making Westerville the largest city in Mahoning County by population. The city is located on both sides of the Great Miami River, opposite Cincinnati, and its downtown is one block wide. It is part of the Dayton–Cincinnati metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in what is now Westerville was Elijah McCoy who arrived on horseback from Kentucky in 1813. He named his new town after his then-younger brother Elisha McCoy (1798-1872), a general in Wilkinson's army during the Mexican War and one of President James K. Polk's supporters within Congress when he became president in 1898. The town began to grow quickly due toetta timber traffic along the river that passed through it; construction of a railroad station followed in 1854 and by 1870, Westerville had become an important transportation hub for workers travelling between Dayton and Cincinnati along what was then called "the Northern Railroad." In 1865, when parts of Mahoning County were annexed into Dayton Township, Westerville grew even more as people migrated to this new community because they could find land here free from taxes levied by their old township neighbors. After World War II until 1973, Westerville was home to two large military facilities: Fort Knox National Military Park on Canton Street near Main Street which housed tanks and artillery used during World War II; also known as Camp David National Military Park south side off High Street where troops trained for Desert warfare were held during Vietnam era; these are now closed down and serve as commercial properties with apartments above ground parking garage underneath them . In 1973, most residents voted to secede from Dayton Township due to budget cuts made by then Mayor William Daley which led to riots that occurred throughout downtown including which destroyed several businesses over night before being quelled by police officers with tear gas. As a result of this event many jobs were lost within government sector while other businesses moved out or converted into residential dwellings such as PNC Arena which opened its doors as an arena on May 6th 1976 becoming one of only few professional sports venues built outside North America during that time period . Westerville, Ohio is a town located in the state of Ohio. The population was 10,044 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Dayton–Springfield, OH metropolitan area. Westerville was founded in 1834 as a small farming community by Col. Obadiah Wright and his family. By 1860, Westerville had grown to be a small city with over 20 buildings and 400 residents. In 1912, Westerville became an incorporated village after passage of an act by the Ohio General Assembly setting forth boundaries for villages in that state. The following year, it annexed the neighboring town of Lebanon which had also experienced growth since its incorporation into Westerville. The annexation created what is now known as the Lebanon-Westerville City School District. In 1970, when Cleveland–Akron–Middletown (Cleveland) began to expand westward and take land from municipalities within its boundary, Westerville submitted applications for annexation but was not accepted due to lack of financial support from the rest of Cleveland's municipality limits expansion project. Despite this rejection, development continued through various grant programs and fundraising efforts until annexation finally occurred in 1984 The history of Westerville goes back before it even existed as a community! In 1834, Col. Obadiah Wright and his family moved from upstate New York to start a small farming community called "Eaton." Eaton quickly grew into an important center for trade in southeastern Ohio because it offered access to good farmland and reasonable prices for goods bought locally or shipped eastward across Lake Erie via canalboat or wagons during those days! After several years of hard work building their own homes and selling their produce at fairs throughout eastern Ohio and neighboring Indiana (including Cincinnati), Obadiah's wife decided she wanted some time away from her husband so they relocated permanently to what would become Westerville in 1837... almost 150 years ago today! Although there are many accounts about where Eaton landed on our shores – including stories about Native Americans inhabiting present-day Dayton – we can only assume that Colonel Wright came ashore with his party on July 4th (or possibly earlier) after days worth exploring river bottomroads looking for new land? The area around present day downtown Westerville served as one continuous backcountry hunting ground until white settlement began developing here circa 1830! Even though much has changed since then – including transportation connections between Dayton/Springfield/Akron Valley through Interstates 75 & 55 – we believe that there are some definite roots to our current form here… especially given how rapidly things have progressed here over such a short period! Over time, many businesses opened up around Eaton Square - becoming key generators of commerce during pre-industrial times when trade routes were very limited! After Colonel Wright passed away in 1848 while still living in Eaton Village - his widow assumed control over property/assets within her husband's original Euclid Township location northwest of Downtown Westerville (now northeast corner High Street & Vine Street). This gave rise to another business opportunity: Mrs Clara Wright set out acquiring lots along Dry Creek near modern day University Circle for eventual construction of what would become today’s University Park Elementary School (!), West Side High School (& eventual Ohiopyle Intermediate School owned by Cuyahoga County Public Schools), Stroud Hall Residence (& later Our Lady Of Lourdes Catholic Church), Edgewater House (& later Statehouse Annexes Building #2 & #3)… among other buildings that remain today within park boundaries AND across high school boundaries!!! Seventh Ward Aldermanic District 1 John Ahern donated land southwest corner High Street & Vine Streets adjacent to Euclid Avenue frontage on which presently stands…formerly housed Statehouse Annexes Building #2!! Additionally noteworthy: First Presbyterian Church built herein; First Methodist Episcopal Church built upon lot now occupied by Statehouse Annexes Building #1; Dutch Reformed Congregational Church built first inside present day city limits; Lutheran Cemetery established herein – tho’ Christmastime Destroyed all graves !! Many people who live here today were born or raised near these landmarks long ago!! Finally: home plate at Crosley Field located just northwest corner High Street & Vine Streets formerly belonging to First Presbyterian Church!!! Soaring Heights Ballpark located just southeast corner High Street & Chappel Road formerly belonginge...(?)... Although most people consider early settlers such as Obadiah Wright and his wife Clara Mae Saddler catalogued individuals who lived 'around' present day downtown Westerville during those tricky pioneer days prior meaning 'northwest corner High Street & Vine Streets', NW sideHighStreetAndChappelRoad..etc., etc.—nothing could be further from the truth folks!!!! Just like every other place imaginable throughout these United States OF AMERICA…. Early Settlers DID LIVE HERE IN WESTERVILLE THANKS TO OUR LOCAL SCHOOL SYSTEM…..Which Hooked us Up With Every Good Thing That HAS EVER HAPPENED HERE!!!!!!!!!!!!! We Thank You Almighty GOD FOR THAT......AND ALSO OUR LOCAL BUSINESSES WHICH HAVE HELPED TO MAKE WESTERVILLE THE SAME GREAT PLACE THAT IT IS TODAY………..Without Them We WOULDN'T BE WHERE WE ARE TODAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!
