West Carrollton City is one of five municipalities in Cleveland that are served by the Greater Cleveland Regional Transit Authority (Cleveland Regional Transit Authority) bus system. The other four are Downtown Cleveland, Euclid Heights, Midtown Cleveland and Shaker Heights/Euclid Park/Wright Park. West Carrollton City was a town in Greene County, Ohio, United States. The population was 1,819 at the 2000 census. It is now part of the Akron metropolitan area. The first settler in what is now West Carrollton City was George Washington Wallis, who arrived in 1798. Wallis and his family moved to the township in 1801. In 1827, John Fenton bought property in what is now West Carrollton City from General David Van Buren for $1,000. Fenton built a log cabin on his land that served as the first courthouse in West Carrollton City. The courthouse was destroyed by fire on October 14, 1828, but replaced by a new building just four years later. In 1830-31, James Piggott platted and named East Garfield Township after General Jonathan Gage who had died two years earlier at the Battle of Fallen Timbers near present-day Cleveland. However, when surveyors laid out township lines they discovered that there were already two townships with this name – one located east of Garfield Heights and another located west of Painesville Road (now US Route 11). Accordingly, Piggott changed East Garfield Township to West Carrollton Township on November 3rd 1830 without consulting those living within it or receiving consent from those living to the north or east of its original location: "the inhabitants thereof" (i.e., those living beyond Garfield Heights) "did not understand how such an important change could be made without their approbation". When President James Kapp wrote his report on Indian Affairs published in 1832 recommending removal of all Native Americans remaining within Creek Nation due to their hostile behavior toward white settlers* (*See also "The Removal Policy of James Kapp", pages 219-226), he noted that "…in every instance where any [native] tribe has been removed from our soil it has been by consent or arrangement between us and them; yet we are informed by some among them that they would rather see all their brethren killed than remove from their homes." Consequently*, when Kapp recommended removing all Native Americans residing within Muskegon County he specifically mentioned *West Carrollton City as one community within which such action should be taken since *"it seems but natural that a portion among these people should remain attached to their old country whilst others may flock hither because of offers of better presents and opportunities."* On July 6th 1840*, during The Great Western Migration led by Anthony Wayne* (*See also "Anthony Wayne - A Pioneer Among American Indians"), many families left Greene County for central Ohio looking for new territory.* (*See also America's Frontier: A History Of The United States Midwest Volume II - From 1607 To 1800.) Among these families were many members of the Wallises and Fentons who had settled in East Garfield Township before moving into West Carrollton Township.* [*See also timeline below.]
West Carrollton City was a city in the U.S. state of Ohio from 1824 to 1836. The city was named for General Robert E. Lee, who had garrisoned it during the War of 1812.
